Senior Associate Claim Consultant

Department: PERMA Risk Management Services

Job Summary: Responsible for supporting Director of Claims with the daily oversight of the claims function of the Joint Insurance Funds (JIF) and Counties / Commissions client’s portfolio of open property, liability, workers’ compensation and other casualty claims inventory managed by PERMA Risk Management Services. The Senior Associate Claims Consultant works closely with the Director of Claims to improve processes and better leverage available data to continually improve the information and services provided by PERMA Claims to internal and external clients.

Principal Responsibilities:

Assist in claims management for all clients and programs managed by PERMA.

Assist PERMA Director of Claims in carrying out the responsibilities of the Claims Director, including acting as a backup when Claims Supervisor is not available.

Subject matter expert with respect to claims issues. Serves as claims discussion facilitator at claims committee and member meetings.

Claims liaison with the client, building a close working relationship with clients and fund professionals.

Works closely with third-party administrators to provide oversight and management of claims.

Manage the complex workers compensation claim (FOCUS) program for serious workers’ compensation claims, including drafting of FOCUS letters for management review, tracking FOCUS claims and involving the risk control vendor J.A. Montgomery Risk Control in FOCUS claims program management.

Conduct trend analysis to identify areas of concern for client, for internal and external distribution.

Oversees claims in multiple lines of coverage for each and every client, including but not limited to, workers’ compensation, general liability, property, public officials and cyber liability.

Develops close working relationship with Clients, Executive Directors, JIF Professionals and any other professionals involved with the program.

Is a liaison for PERMA with the various clients, JIF professionals, and third-party administrators and outside vendors with whom we interact.

Become claims department subject matter expert on all internal and external systems accessed by claims department (Origami, iVos, Risk Console and other internal, carrier or TPA systems).

Review and comment on all PARs ahead of claims committee meetings, provide analysis to Executive Directors and Claims Manager, and follow up with TPA.

Review all weekly reports from TPAs to ensure that JIF Executive Directors, Claims Manager and PERMA Management are aware of changes or developments that may have a financial impact.

Attend NJCE, MEL and JIF claims and commission meetings.

Prepare templates for Payment Authorization Requests (PARs) and Excess Claim Reports.

Performs claims audits in conjunction with Claims Supervisor, assists in establishment of audit structure and best practices for claims handling.

Other Functions

Keeps updated on industry trends and coverage changes.

Works on special claims projects, as needed.

Provides “back-up” to other Claims Personnel who are unavailable due to PTO, etc.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent work experience.

Minimum 7 years of insurance industry experience in claims and/or risk management positions.

Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Must have the ability to be flexible with work schedule, available as needed on an emergency basis.

Must stay abreast of changes in Insurance industry.

Must be organized and detail-oriented and possess a positive attitude.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently.

Must possess excellent analytical skills and problem solving skills.

Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without Company sponsorship.

Specialized Knowledge or Licenses:

Valid Property & Casualty Producer’s License (Within 90 days of start of employment, if he/she does not already have it)

Juris Doctorate or Risk Management Degree preferred but not required

Valid Driver’s License (to travel to meetings throughout the state of New Jersey)

Working Conditions

Office environment with moderate noise level; able to work beyond scheduled hours and travel to other Conner Strong & Buckelew/PERMA offices or to client work sites if necessary.
