Description:

Qualifications:

A strong background in probabilities, statistics and multivariate statistics is required, including extreme value assessment, exceedence or event probabilities and stochastic methods in natural, event based analyses;

Experience applying and extending statistical techniques, including data-driven, joint probability methods, and machine learning methods;

Experience and/or willingness to cross interdisciplinary specialties in the areas of inland flooding, coastal flooding, and atmospheric sciences would be beneficial. This includes probability analysis, machine learning, storm climatology, database management, civil engineering, and coastal engineering;

Current experience and interest in machine learning/artificial intelligence (surrogate or metamodeling) from a coastal, hydrologic, geoscience or natural hazard perspective;

Experience with federal agency guidance and standards approaches to engineering and risk-based engineering design (such as USACE, DOD, FEMA, NOAA, BOR, FERC, etc...);

Willingness to learn or experience preferred using federal datasets is, including mid-size irregular spatial and temporal datasets for application, combination and/or comparison in statistical and probabilistic analyses;

Experience working with specialist across disciplines and ability to rapidly learn, utilize and synthesize literature and discussion involving jargon from multiple specialties (e.g. coastal and meteorological);

Experience reviewing and assessing complex study results, and developing novel approaches to test and visualize research results. Ability to publish in peer-review journals and present results to research and academic community in more depth;

Ability to convey results concisely to the community of practice (i.e. non-researchers as well as researchers), federal and local sponsors through written reports and oral communication;

Experience and/or willingness to cross interdisciplinary specialties in the areas of: coastal structure responses, coastal storm hazards, programming, statistics, and technical writing;

Programing and software-development skills: proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python is required. Capable of visualizing spatial data across coastal/inland transition, such as experience or training in basic GIS or Mapping Toolbox functions and geospatial and projected reference systems;

Experience in project and/or task management; Capable of performing or willing to learn functions of a Principal Investigator. Capable of or experience in contributing role or roles in professional, inter- or intra-agency groups;
