Job Title: Youth Substance Abuse Counselor

Job Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Reports To: Maria Flores

Job Summary

The Youth Substance Abuse Counselor will cultivate and promote relationships with service providers to achieve coordination of care.

Key Responsibilities

Create a trauma informed, harm reduction substance abuse program for youth and young adults ages 14-25 years of age.

Conduct Wellness Assessments, Create Follow up plans and resources to support youth’s progress. Make adjustment to plans as needed.

Maintain Homeboys Care4 database updated.

Offer substance abuse programming that includes AA, NA, and resources to Al-Anon groups.

Be a resource for youth and young adult outpatient and residential programming.

Provide one-on-one mentorship to all trainees that directly supports the reentry process by serving as positive and responsive role model.

Coordinate the work at the Youth Reentry Center in collaboration with the Art Academy and Learning Works and Bruno related to this population.

Coordinate with Diversion Teams, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse staff.

Support clients individualized service plans created by the case managers and client.

Provide feedback to case managers on client’s progress, based on client’s needs, challenges/struggles and success.

Support, coordinate, and organize outings/events with case managers to enhance the clients experience at Homeboy Industries and expose the client to new environments. Support and Coordinate field trips related to Wellness.

Plan, implement and facilitate groups.

Drug Test; follow up with drug consent forms for both minors and adults.

Support and engage parents to understand our model if needed.

Maintain current partnerships and expand our network.

Provide individual substance about counseling.

Facilitate psycho-educational groups on SUD, relapse prevention, and maintenance.

Research best practices and bridge into day-to-day interventions

Under the guidance and supervision of SUD program manager design and develop age-appropriate SUD programming that addresses healthy/unhealthy coping mechanisms for youth and young adults

Promote healthy lifestyles and expose youth to alternative coping skills.

Qualifications

Background in substance abuse programming, high-risk youth, and wellness assessments and plans.

Social Work degree preferred; commensurate experience will suffice

Capacity to manage and lead people; team builder; ability to connect with staff both on an individual and group level.

Capacity to hold team members and trainees accountable, develop and empower team from the bottom up, and *learn the strengths and weaknesses of team in order to put people in a position to succeed.

Mission-driven person with strong work ethic; challenge seeker and problem solver; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance and take unpopular stands when necessary.

Ability to maintain strong professional and personal boundaries, while still providing mentorship to individuals, as needed.

Detail oriented with excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills.

Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and FileMaker Pro.

Work degree, but not

Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.

Pay Rate

$26/hr.

The actual compensation offered may vary depending on qualifications and other factors essential to the performance of duties that has been determined by the hiring authority.
