Pay Range

$85,900.00-$118,100.00 Annual

This is the base salary pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire. Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors. In addition, this position is eligible for an incentive bonus.

Metallurgical Research Engineer

Johns Manville is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Metallurgical Research Engineer located in the Johns Manville Technical Center in Littleton, CO.

The Metallurgy and Advanced Materials Group provides technical support, materials and process development, and longer-term research for all aspects of JM manufacturing processes. The Metallurgical and Materials Engineer is a key role that will contribute to material and metallurgical services and technical support to Johns Manville internal customers including fabrication facilities, production plants, divisional engineering, and R&D staff. Responsibilities will include utilization of a wide variety of laboratory equipment to characterize materials, utilize materials modeling tools, report writing, lead projects, make methodology decisions, and interface with staff at the technical center and manufacturing facilities. The applicant must be familiar with materials testing, morphological and microstructural analysis using optical microscopy and SEM, thermodynamic and diffusion modeling, and develop solid conclusions and practical recommendations based on the findings.

Your Day-to-Day:

Plan, estimate costs, schedule and execute the technological work needed in support of divisional research program objectives and where required, conduct test programs at outside agency locations or customer plants

Collect and analyze experimental data to research meaningful, valid conclusions and write summarizing reports

Devise and/or use new test methods, processes and materials as required meeting objectives

Determine and define plant equipment operating parameters and formulae needed to insure quality of the product and the operation of the process

Determine and define the product properties required to meet divisional objectives

Write and submit product proposals and specifications to appropriate divisional authorities

Determine if results merit Patent application and pursue with Legal Department

Lead project from lab to pilot to plant trial

Work with other department/divisional technical resources to gain code approval

May be required to perform other related duties as assigned

What You Bring to the Team:

MSc Degree, or BSc Degree with 3 to 5 years of experience, in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering / Materials Science or related Science degrees

Familiar with ferrous and non-ferrous high temperature metallic materials, and ceramics

Proficient in the use of a wide variety of lab equipment for sample preparation and characterization including SEM/EDX

Experience performing hardness, tensile, and creep testing

Exposure to high temperature corrosion of materials

Familiar with metallography, analysis, and interpretation of microstructures and features

Experience using thermodynamic and diffusion computer modeling tools such as Thermo-Calc, DICTRA, and TC Prisma

Motivated, goal oriented, flexible, and able to work effectively as either an individual contributor or as a cross-functional team member

Proficient report writing skills and communication

Familiar with Statistics and DOE, Minitab

Further consideration given for:

Experience with specialized high temperature materials other than steels

Metal refining, foundry, or casting experience

Failure analysis experience particularly related to environmental effects on materials

Experience with EBSD techniques

Experience with Solid Works, Phyton, Fusion 360, Wire EDM software

PhD Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Working conditions: Job will entail working primarily in a laboratory setting. May be required to lift, carry, push, or pull up to and including 25 pounds.

Travel Requirements: May travel up to 10%.
