Summary

The Dialysis Nurse Manager working in the Dialysis Unit is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating resident care. The RN Manager coordinates, delegates, provides direct nursing care for residents and oversees the daily functions of the Dialysis staff. The RN Manager provides supervision for resident team members in accordance with their level of training and the residents acuity.

The Dialysis Nurse Manager works in a collaborative manner with all clinic providers, the Medical Director, registered nurses, patient care technicians, Administrator, Social Workers, Registered Dieticians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to plan, direct, and evaluate the quality of care management with patients and their families.

Duties and Responsibilities

The dialysis manager maintains accountability for the coordination and delivery of care to residents with End Stage Renal Disease. (ESRD) The responsibilities of the dialysis manager include:

1. Oversees the preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirms that all mandatory alarm tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed.

2. Reviews physician orders for dialysis residents, collects pre-treatment dialysis data, and reviews resident records prior to dialysis.

3. Conducts pre-dialysis resident patient assessment including obtaining resident vital signs and assessing the

resident’s vascular access, laboratory findings, and the resident’s general health.

4. Verifies that residents are taking all prescribed medications and performs medication reconciliation.

5. Documents findings of the resident assessments and interventions and advises providers of any significant

change in the resident’s condition and other pertinent information.

6. Discuss resident concerns and answers questions relevant to care.

7. Oversees dialysis technicians in the performance of dialysis from start to finish, monitors resident reaction to treatment and performance of the dialysis machines, and demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of dialysis.

8. Assesses, prepares, and cannulates a resident’s vascular access (including needle insertion in arteriovenous fistula or grafts for aseptic connection with dialysis equipment)

9. Utilizes sterile technique to assess the dialysis catheter exit site to apply dressing on the resident’s vascular

access (dialysis catheter, arteriovenous access) per protocols.

10. Maintains skills necessary to perform surveillance on dialysis access (catheter, fistula, graft) for early signs of failure or infection; this includes (if needed and after receiving the appropriate training) the ability to perform arteriovenous access monitoring using ultrasound machines per protocol.

11. Reviews resident’s electronic health records for orders as appropriate and administers

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing

Licenses/Certifications

• Valid and unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of KY

• Valid and current CPR certification

Experience

• Prefer progressive nursing management experience with demonstrated success in a chronic or acute dialysis setting and supervisory experience; must have 2 years relevant experience in clinical practice.

• Minimum of 1 year in a leadership role preferred

• Demonstrates basic computer skills and proficiency in MD Word and Outlook

• Prior experience providing nursing care to patients on an acute dialysis

• Demonstrates high level of personal and professional accountability and responsibility

• Anemia Management

• Osteodystrophy Management

• Preferred Nursing Certification in Dialysis/Nephrology
