Fall Intern, Technology and Geoeconomic Affairs

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is seeking a Fall Intern for the Technology and Geoeconomic Affairs group (TGA) to provide research, communication, event planning, and administrative support for TGA projects. Based in NBR's Washington, D.C. office, this opportunity allows the individual to develop experience working on Indo-Pacific technology, innovation, and geoeconomic issues through on-the-job experience.

This is a paid, part-time (20-25hr/week), special assignment (4-5 month) position reporting to the Senior Project Manager, Technology and Geoeconomic Affairs. NBR utilizes a hybrid work schedule, and the intern will split time between working in the office and working remotely. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work August 2024 through December 2024.Responsibilities

Research Assistance: providing substantive research assistance for project teams and scholars, including gathering articles on current events and background on key individuals, attending and summarizing relevant events, and interviewing an expert related to ongoing research initiatives for a Q&A to be published on NBR's website.

Writing Assistance: drafting and proofreading concept papers, memos, grant reports, briefing papers, etc.

Publications Support: editing, reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading, and formatting project publications, including commentaries, essays, reports, and analyses.

Grant Development: tracking development and grant opportunities; assisting with scoping and drafting project proposal narratives.

Event Planning: providing administrative support for conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (including drafting agendas, assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements, sending and responding to invitations, note-taking, managing logistics, etc.).

Administrative Support and Database Administration: drafting and managing independent contractor agreements for external project experts, submitting invoices and receipts through the online financial management system, and supporting other NBR activities as needed.Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (or current student) in Asia Studies, international relations, foreign policy, political science, economics, or other relevant discipline.

Demonstration of strong writing skills

Knowledge of and interest in U.S. trade, economics, technology, intellectual property, or foreign policy, especially pertaining to Asia

Some in-office research assistance and/or administrative support experience.

Excellent research and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.

Self-motivated with ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or current master's candidate.

Advanced Asian language skills a plus, particularly Chinese, Korean, or JapaneseAbout NBR

This is a hybrid position based in our Washington, DC office. Part-Time staff are expected to work in-office at least one day per week. The expected pay range for this position is $20.00 per hour to $21.00 per hour, depending on education level.

This part-time position includes 25 paid holidays per year, up to 56 hours of paid sick leave (calculated at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked), and 1 day of paid professional development leave. NBR covers 80% of employees' Public Transit commuting costs.
