Polysomnography Tech Trainee

The Trainee is responsible for learning the functions of EEG technology under the direct supervision of the EEG Technologist, Evoked Potential Specialists, LTM Specialist, and the Clinical Leader or Program Manager for Neurodiagnostics. The Trainee will eventually demonstrate competence defined as providing age-appropriate care and service to patients from the age of birth to 21-years, and selected adult patients. The Trainee will be eligible for consideration for promotion to EEG technician I after 1 year experience working in Neurodiagnostics and demonstrate competence in core duties and responsibilities.

Schedule: Hours and days will vary during the training period of 90 days. After the training period this is a 13 hour nightshift Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Assignment will will also vary between locations (Main campus, or Lewis Center)

Responsibilities

Following established Policies and Procedures the incumbent will learn to perform a limited variety of investigational procedures on patients with possible neurologic injury and disease. These procedures include:

Routine video EEG

Extended video EEG

Portable video EEG

Portable Extended video EEG

Long Term Epilepsy Monitoring (EMU/LTM)

As the technologist gains more knowledge additional procedures may be added on an individual basis. Specific tests may require the application of non-routine recording parameters. These tests may employ special recording techniques to record eye movements, muscle activity, ECG, chest wall movement, tongue movements, and nasal and oral air flow, among others. Testing may occasionally be necessary in the Intensive Care Units, Emergency Room, or patient's room.The incumbent is responsible for:

Adhering to all Policies and Procedures.

Following age-related competencies.

Learning the functions of an EEG technologist through group and/or individual teaching, observation, assigned reading, and practical application under the direct supervision of laboratory staff.

Learning the International 10-20 System for placement of EEG electrodes.

Applying electrodes using collodion and paste methods.

Checking the impedances of applied electrodes.

Calibrating and adjusting the EEG instrument.

Learning the standard laboratory montages for recording the EEG.

Learning the function of sensitivity, high frequency filter settings, low frequency filter settings, and paper speed adjustments.

Recognizing and eliminating artifact and electrical interference in order to obtain high quality tracings.

Learning the purpose of photic stimulation and hyperventilation.

Learning basic anatomy and physiology of the body as it applies to EEG technology.

Learning the patterns of EEG activity, both normal and abnormal.

Learning the purpose of other basic diagnostic studies.

Learning the operating principles of pertinent electronic instrumentation.

Providing appropriate patient care and detailed observations of clinical manifestations during seizures and other patient emergency situations.

Participating in conferences, technical meetings, and other educational activities.

Writing a summary of the patient's neurological status and clinical history from the chart, patient, parent, guardian, or other knowledgeable person(s).

Explaining the procedure to the patient and/or any family members present.

Answering phones, scheduling procedures, and attending to front office responsibilities during periods of high volume or co-worker illness.

Facilitating the transportation of equipment and patients as necessary to complete the daily work schedule.

Maintaining departmental records and preparing tracings for storage.

Maintaining supplies at a reasonable level and ordering supplies.

Processing patient charge information.

Maintaining equipment in a calibrated and clean fashion.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education:

High school graduate

Must have a current CPR certificate.

Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences or related field.

Proficient in computer operations/technology

Minimum Physical Requirement:

Ability to lift up to thirty pounds frequently.

Ability to lift fifty pounds occasionally.

Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time frequently.

Transporting equipment occasionally.

Reaching above the head, stooping, and kneeling frequently.
