The position of Police Cadet is a specialized training and education program designed to help strengthen and diversify the future workforce for the Regional Transportation District Police Department. Cadets will be assigned administrative duties, participate in department and community events and will participate in training that teaches skills essential to pursuing a career in public safety. Some of the trainings include self-defense tactics, radio communications, and conflict resolution. On average, cadets work up to 20 hours per week and are sometimes requested to work nights and weekends.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL:
Perform clerical and administrative duties under the direct supervision of a sworn officer
Attend events and community outreach functions
Participate in training related to skills essential to becoming a police officer
Observes patrol, video investigations, police communications, mental health clinicians and homeless outreach personnel
OTHER:
All job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To enroll in the RTD Cadet Corps, a candidate must:
Be at least 20 years old and be eligible to meet the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification including age requirements (21 years old) to be a police officer upon graduation.
Be a full-time college student with at least 90 credits at the time of hire. Students must have a 2.0 GPA, earn a minimum of 12 credits each semester and be enrolled in a 4-year degree program at Colorado accredited institution, in good academic standing.
To remain in the RTD Cadet Corps, a cadet must:
Maintain the 2.0 GPA and earn a minimum of 12 credits per semester, while enrolled in the Cadet Corps.
Work a minimum of 10 hrs. but no more than 20 hrs. a week ($18.00 hr.)
Academy Tuition Assistance and Other Benefits
Upon successful completion of the Cadet program, Cadets who meet the requirements to be hired as a PO1 are eligible to receive RTD sponsorship at a Colorado POST approved academy. .
