Position Summary

The Fresh Air Fund is hiring a seasonal summer Farm Nutritionist to facilitate farm to table educational programming at our model farm this summer. The role requires the person to plan and facilitate summer farm visits that educate campers about nutrition, where food comes from, and the importance of a healthy diet. Farm Nutritionist helps maintain the garden and take care of the farm animals with farmers. The ideal candidate is a hardworking person, enjoys teaching youth, has a curious mind about the outdoors, a background in nutrition or food service and an interest in learning more about farm animals or gardening.

This is a residential seasonal position based at Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, NY. The role will be in-person will report to the Farm Director.

Responsibilities:

Create and conduct one-hour classes that emphasize and make connections to in-season foods with the importance of diet and good health as well as connecting the food campers eat to where it originated from.

Oversee daily morning breakfast programs and occasional dinner programs that utilize farm products from the farm garden and/or local farms.

Maintain the daily sanitation and food safety measures of the nutrition center. Oversee other farm staff to ensure they comply with safety measures of the program area including basic sanitation, equipment operations, proper food handling and other operational hazards.

Oversee food ordering and inventory.

Ensure the safety of the campers while in the program area. This includes safe use of specialized equipment such as knives, appliances, etc. and welcoming assistance from counselors to help encourage their presence with groups

Participate in caring for the animals and maintaining the garden at the farm.

Participate fully in all assigned camp activities.

Understand that campers come first, and decisions should be made in the best interest of campers.

Address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment.

Strive to work cooperatively with fellow staff to achieve the program's goals.

Explain and enforce the policies, traditions, and rules of camp.

Invest time with campers to meet their needs, challenge their capabilities, and serve as a role model during their time at camp.

Take ownership of the use and care of camp equipment and facilities.

Be familiar with emergency procedures and follow them when necessary.

Additional responsibilities as needed and assigned.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of camp.

At least one year of college or equivalent with coursework in nutrition preferred.

ServSafe Food Handler's certification preferred

A minimum of one-year experience working with children is required. Staff must be passionate about working with children.

Must have teaching experience in this area and prior experience with cooking, planning, and ordering food. Should also have basic knowledge of nutrition and benefits of healthy eating with some knowledge of food justice issues.

Interested in working and living in the outdoors for the summer.

Emotionally mature with a willingness to work as a team player.

Flexible, willing to accept challenges and step outside comfort zone.

Able to maintain a positive attitude.

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk, or hear.

Able to regularly lift and/or move equipment and supplies weighing 20+ pounds.

Comfortable with being exposed to wet, humid, and hot conditions.

Available for the entire duration of the summer program.

Experience and Skills gained by the end of summer:

Lesson planning for Fresh Air Fund’s Model Farm Nutrition center.

Overseeing breakfast and Dinner production.

Researching and Developing Nutritional recipes.

Educating youth on Nutrition.

Lifelong memories and working with youth at camp.

CPR/AED training.

Gain Knowledge about livestock.

Better understanding of the Native Flora and Fauna.

Gardening; Planting, Tending, Harvesting and Processing of crops.

Knowledge about Agricultural sustainable practices.

Broader understanding of nutrition and farm to table cooking.

Being a team player and part of an Environmental passionate team.
