Alcohol and Drug Counselor

Summary:

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and therapy services to individuals who are seeking treatment for substance use disorder. The counselor's main goal is to help these individuals overcome their challenges and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Job Duties:

1. Conducting assessments and evaluations to determine the specific needs and goals of each client.

2. Developing individualized treatment plans based on the needs and goals of each client.

3. Providing individual and group counseling sessions.

Understanding and implementing the ASAM criteria.

5. Implementing evidence-based curriculum and counseling skills to help clients reach their treatment goals.

Monitoring and evaluating client progress and adjusting treatment plans as necessary.

7. Collaborating with other staff members.

Providing education and support to clients' families to help them understand and cope with their loved one's treatment.

9. Documenting all client interactions, treatment plans, and progress in the appropriate electronic health record system and within the required timeframe.

10. Participating in regular supervision and continuing education to stay up-to-date on the latest research and best practices in counseling.

In addition to these specific job duties, the Alcohol and Treatment Counselor is expected to adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality with clients. They should also have strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with clients and collaborate with other professionals.

Qualifications for a Counselor:

- Must have an LADC (ADC/T). An alcohol and drug counselor must either be licensed or exempt from licensure under chapter 148F.

- Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse treatment programs and interventions

- Familiarity with insurance procedures and documentation requirements

- Strong organizational and time-management skills

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and high-stress environment

- Empathy and understanding for individuals seeking treatment for mental health or substance abuse issues

- Proficiency in using electronic health records systems and other relevant software applications.
