Controller

International Relations and Policy Nonprofit

Washington, DC (Hybrid)

Salary: Approximately $130,000 to $164,000 per year, with potential flexibility, based on experience, credentials, etc.

Terrific Controller position with an international relations and policy nonprofit in Washington, D.C. The Controller will provide strategic oversight and manage the day-to-day accounting functions of a growing organization with a budget approaching $40 million, funded primarily by U.S. and foreign grants and contracts. Responsibilities will include the monthly close process, financial statement preparation, regulatory compliance, grants accounting, AP/AR, payroll, variance analysis and serving as the point of contact for the annual audit. The Controller will manage and mentor a team of four accounting professionals. Qualified candidates should have approximately 8+ years of related accounting experience, including time in a management role. Bachelor's degree is required. CPA and/or advanced degree is preferred. Experience with European and U.S. government grants is preferred. The salary range for this position is approximately $130,000 to $164,000 per year, with potential flexibility, based on experience, credentials, etc. This position is based in Washington, D.C. and operates on a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities:

Manage the daily operations of the accounting department including monthly close, AP/AR, payroll, audits, and compliance

Ensure implementation and maintenance of effective internal controls

Maintain compliance with donor requirements, reporting and other financial regulations

Create monthly financial statements, analyses, and other reports

Assist the CFO on annual budgeting and forecasting

Collaborate with auditors on audits and prepare Form 990

Monitor grants and external revenue

Manage, mentor, and train a team of 4

Qualifications:

Approximately 8+ years of relevant accounting experience, including time in a management role

Bachelor's degree is required; CPA or advanced degree preferred

Excellent understanding of GAAP and other accounting matters

Grant accounting experience

Previous work in NetSuite or similar general ledger accounting software

Experience with U.S. and European government grants preferred

Strong Excel skills including expressions, pivot tables, and lookups; comfortable working with large data sets
