Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider in our Duke Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic located in Durham, NC to provide medical and surgical care

for patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery, advanced heart failure management and mechanical support. The cardiothoracic physician assistant will perform these services under the direct supervision of the faculty physician(s) and will provide perioperative care in various medical center settings. Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients. Rotational on-call responsibilities for emergent surgical cases when assistance is required.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Provides care to patients of all ages(newborn to elderly adult).

Completes history/ physical examinations, and consultations

Completes admission and perioperative orders including consultations

Completes data acquisition/analysis and database maintenance

Coordinates/communicates patient care with nursing staff

Participates in patient/family education

Communicates with referring/consulting housestaff and physicians as well as outside referring physicians.

Obtains data for surgical research

Initiates/participates in resuscitation of patients (by ACLS standards)

Participates in medical chart maintenance

Participates in all aspects of follow-up care for discharged patients through clinic visits and phone calls.

Evaluates pre and postoperative patients in the clinic setting

Initiates orders for medications

Participates in clinical trial enrollment

Orders and schedules laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.

Performs procedures such as surgical first assisting, conduit harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafting procedures, simple wound debridement, suturing and wound vac dressing management.

Documents progress/interval notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepares patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.

Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

Certification

RNFA certification required for NP applicants.

ACLS certification required.

BLS required.

License

Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.

Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Experience

1+ years of surgical APP experience strongly preferred.
