Job Description

Salary: $17-$19 per hour

The New Republic is seeking a full-time intern to join our editorial team on July 2. The position pays $17 - $19/hour and lasts six months. Though we work remotely at TNR, you must be based in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland tristate areas. The deadline for applications is May 24, but please apply immediately if you're interested.

The intern reports to the executive editor and has five key responsibilities: copyediting, fact-checking, transcription, administrative duties, and writing for our website. While applicants do not need to have experience in all of these areas—training will be provided—the right candidate will be someone who follows the news, obsesses over language and facts, is well-organized, and pays close attention to detail. Journalism experience, educationally or professionally, is preferred.

Your week will look something like this:

Copy editing. Working alongside our chief copy editor, the intern will copyedit web pieces and/or newsletters on a daily basis.

Fact-checking. Collaborating with our web editors, the intern will fact-check web pieces of various lengths on an intermittent basis.

Transcription. Collaborating with the editorial director, the intern will proofread software-generated transcriptions of our two twice-monthly podcasts.

Administration. Helping our web editors, the intern will handle RightSignature paperwork for freelancers and maintain the editorial calendar in Asana.

Writing. As time and ability allow, the intern will write for TNR’s breaking news feed, The Ticker.

To apply, click the “Apply for This Job” button on this page. Submit your résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’re right for this job. The cover letter should be tailored to TNR and show an understanding of our work. If you have writing clips, paste links to them in your cover letter or resume. Finalists will be asked to take a copy-editing test.

The New Republic is committed to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.
