Description:

Assists with day to-day management of Radioactive material, X-ray and Laser Safety Programs. Monitor for compliance with applicable regulations in consultation with the Radiation /Laser Safety Officer.

Provides complex technical and regulatory assistance to departments and researchers using initiative and judgment.

Reviews radiation use to ensure compliance with institutional policies and other applicable regulations.

Audits campus buildings and laboratories for radioactive materials, chemical safety, biological safety, use of controlled substances/dangerous drugs and US EPA Compliance.

Maintain radiation safety records including the principal investigator's files, in compliance with state and federal regulations; maintain applicable computer databases.

Performs basic health physics functions which include sealed source leak test, radioactivity wipe test, administration of radiation dosimeter program, survey meter calibrations, bioassays and environmental monitoring.

Provides training on safe use, handling, and storage of hazardous materials and radiation sources to university personnel.

Investigates and documents chemical, biological and radiation incidents. Responds to emergencies, spills and overexposure to hazardous materials.

May assist the Radiation Safety Manager with reviews of employee work.

Advises faculty and staff regarding the required levels of containment in hazard-specific work areas.

Performs other job related duties as needed.

Additional Job Posting Information:

Prefer Bachelor of Science in engineering, physics, or science or related field.

Prefer experience with Texas or NRC regulations on radiation

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and be able to use computer databases.

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience.

Bachelors and 3 years experience

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Bachelor's degree from accredited academic institution in health physics, radiological health, physical science or a biological science with a physical science minor.Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience. At least three years of applied health physics experience in programs with specific licenses for broad scope authorization in research and development or similar. Experience in x-ray and laser safety program implementation is desired.
