Safety Statement:

This is a safety sensitive position.

Job Purpose:

Supervises and coordinates activities of tool and die makers engaged in the production and repair of metal working dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and cutting tools. Applies knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, machining, and assembly procedures.

Essential Functions:

Supervises in the analysis of specifications (e.g., blueprints, sketches, models, descriptions) to visualize products.

Supervises in computing dimensions; planning layout and assembly operations; measuring, marking, and scribing metal stock for machining; and setting up and operating machine tools.

Reviews tool designs for new tooling.

Verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.

Estimates tool costs.

Plans the overall operations of one or more areas or units and ensures achievement of goals and objectives either directly or through staff.

Approves purchase orders for materials and components.

Develops, coaches, and/or mentor’s staff.

Able to use a telephone, and in-house computer system used at Virco.

Conducts performance evaluations; recommends salary adjustments; schedules and approves overtime; takes disciplinary action, as necessary; etc.

Designs, trains, and manages the tool and die design group and handles multiple project deadlines.

Develops, interprets, and ensures the consistent application of organization policies.

Must be flexible to perform other duties as assigned and required.

The ability to work well with outside vendors and machine shops.

Staying current with the latest trends and technologies (designing and machining techniques).

Interacts with production and engineering.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 7 years of Tool and Die experience.

Must have a minimum of three years of supervisory experience.

Able to handle multiple projects.

Must be able to speak English.

Must have excellent and proficient communication skills and be able to articulate complex concepts and details with management and employees.

Working knowledge in Microsoft: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Need to be flexible with required working hours, including Saturdays.

Must have the ability to drive motorized equipment or vehicles and have a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to work well with outside vendors and machine shops.

Demonstrated ability to problem solve and make informed decisions relating to area of responsibility.

Strong organizational skills.

Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with attention to detail.

Ability to motivate others in high-pressure situations.

Must display an attitude of cooperation and the ability to work well with others.

Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive position change.

Experience in safe practices and producing quality work.

Have a high mechanical aptitude with strong computer and technical math skills related to tool design and tool die making.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with E-PAC, MASTERCAM, Solid Works, or SAP is a plus.

Associate degree in related field is preferred.

Metallurgy/heat treat knowledge.

Experience with estimating project costs.

Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

Able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds to waist level. Occasionally pushes and/or pulls up to 30 pounds. Occasionally bends and stoops. Must be able to on occasion withstand a minimum of 2 to 3 hours drawing sketches or doing modifications. Must wear applicable and proper protective equipment including, but not limited to protective eye and/or hearing equipment to safely perform job duties. Will occasionally be exposed to chemicals, dust, heat, cold, gas, and/or fumes. Must be able to adjust to normal plant environmental conditions (above moderate heat and cold) and to adapt quickly to physical applications requiring varying motor skills.
