Smith's Landing First Nation (SLFN), has approximately 360 members of Dene heritage that live on and off reserve.

We are in Northern Alberta, on the border between Alberta and the Northwest Territories just outside the town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

As a border community we work with all levels of government; Provincial, Territorial, Federal, and the local municipality of Fort Smith.

Several of our members live within the Town of Fort Smith and have a strong connection to the environment and rely on the lands in and around Wood Buffalo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Slave River for harvesting fish and game.

Our Education, Housing, Lands, Wellness, and Health Department programs provide opportunities and support for all eligible Smith’s Landing First Nation members.

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Family and Wellness Support Coordinator to join our team and play a crucial role in supporting our families and individuals in achieving their wellness goals.

Reporting to the Health Director, the Family and Wellness Support Coordinator will provide culturally sensitive, quality, and traditional services to Smith’s Landing First Nation (SLFN) children, youth, adults, and families.

The Family and Wellness Support Coordinator provides the appropriate support, advice, and advocacy for any community members at risk.

This position will collaborate with other SLFN staff, local child welfare agencies, Jordan’s Principle, and other local agency professionals to provide seamless and quality care.

The successful candidate must be a team player, an excellent facilitator and communicator who can build positive trusting relationships with the community, partners, and service providers.

The successful candidate must be able to relocate to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: A focus will be on providing community-based programming and support and services based on SLFN community members’ needs.

Areas of support shall be provided for counseling, membership assistance, medical transportation, social development, drug and alcohol treatment/prevention, rehabilitation programming, family violence, prevention programming, education awareness initiatives, and traditional parenting skills while keeping with the values of SLFN tradition and culture in focus.

Provide program and service referrals as required.

Maintain client related records and ensure that all required documentation, inclusive of case notes, screenings, assessments, and support plans are maintained and kept secure and confidential.

Prepare client related statistics for reporting purposes.

Prepare proposals, work plans, reports, and materials for use in direct client sessions.

Supervise the Event Planner and Youth Assistant positions.

QUALIFICATIONS: Social Work Diploma (or related diploma) with 4 years or more related experience; Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; 4+ years’ experience counseling children and their families; Proven experience working from a trauma-informed perspective; First Aid Certificate, CPR, and WHMIS; Advanced experience with MS Office (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel); Outlook and the Internet; Membership with a professional association/regulatory body is an asset; Experience working in a First Nation community would be an asset; The ability to speak Smith’s Landing First Nation’s Chipewyan/Dënésułıné language would be an asset; Clear RCMP Criminal Record Check and Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Background check is required; Valid class 5 drivers’ license with satisfactory drivers abstract and appropriate insurance.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Excellent facilitation and communication skills (oral, written, and listening); Sound knowledge of childhood and adolescent development and children’s mental health; The ability and desire to effectively create trusting, genuine, and supportive relationships for clients and the community; Demonstrated ability in maintaining a high degree of confidentiality and setting appropriate professional boundaries; Non-judgmental, open, honest, helpful, and flexible with a willingness to advocate on behalf of the client; Creative problem-solving skills; Conflict resolution and/or de-escalation skills; Possess positive role modelling skills; Commitment to live a healthy life; Knowledge of local agencies with alcohol and drug abuse programs.
