Senior Director, Energy

EdgeConneX’s growing data center portfolio consumes significant amounts of energy. However, access to utility supplied power is increasingly constrained in many major global markets. In addition, given our commitment to sustainability, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

In this role, you will work towards uncovering creative approaches to powering our growing global data center footprint while supporting our published commitments around Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions. This will involve a very broad span of activities, including engaging with utility and power companies around the world, sophisticated wholesale and retail energy procurement to technology investigations to power our data centers in a sustainable manner.

You will report to the COO, and work closely with internal engineering and operations teams. This position is based in Herndon, VA, and has a hybrid schedule (office/home).

Primary Responsibilities

Build new knowledge about the utility supply picture in markets of interest to ECX.

Work with internal engineering and technology teams to leverage creative approaches to sourcing power, including (but not limited to) captive generation infrastructure.

Closely monitor the technology landscape and actively seek out partnerships to help ECX meet its goals regarding power interconnection and sustainability.

Investigate technology offerings available in the marketplace to assist with our 24x7 CFE objectives and work with ECX teams to turn promising approaches into products.

Influence utility policy and thinking where possible with key insights into technology and energy supply.

Conceive of and test approaches to speed up interconnection timelines.

Leverage market conditions in ECX data center locations to continue to offset our carbon emissions by actively moving towards 24x7 carbon free energy by 2030.

Assemble a core portfolio of consultants capable of executing feasibility and market entry studies at a global scale.

Active engagement with the industry to keep abreast of latest developments in renewable technologies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to set targets and comfort with ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities.

Strong and effective team player in working with various disciplines and peer groups; can cover all gamut of tasks required to ‘getting a job done.’

Superb analytical skills.

Strong communications, both written and verbal, in leading teams and coordinating with peers and other disciplines on driving projects/issues to closure.

Commitment to organizational excellence and constant awareness to seek opportunities to improve processes/quality of deliverables.

Superb ability to meet committed timelines, leveraging assistance/input from peers.

Strong attention to detail.

Experience/Education

Bachelor’s or graduate degree in engineering or a related discipline.

7+ years of experience in the power generation, utility, and/or data center power procurement fields.

Deep understanding of how key energy markets in the US (e.g., PJM, ERCOT) and/or in the EU/Asia/Latin America regions function.

In-depth experience with assembling renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) and virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs).

Working knowledge of renewable development industry (solar, wind, energy storage etc.).

Working knowledge of power transmission and distribution technology and market fundamentals.

Familiarity with data center architectures and fundamental concepts such as power usage effectiveness.

US Salary Range

$170,000—$190,000 USD
