The Van Andel Institute (VAI) is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician to ensure the Institute can continue to provide excellent animal support for our research studies involving mice and rats. In this role, you will be responsible for general cleaning duties, animal care, and husbandry necessary to maintain the continuous operation of our Vivarium and assist in the conduction of animal experiments in support of Institute research. Training and support to achieve professional certifications in animal care are provided in this role.

The primary duties you would be tasked with include:

Provide basic care and daily husbandry for large groups of laboratory animals such as mice and rats.

Conduct breeding, care, and treatment or testing of laboratory animals.

Perform, observe, and record physical signs of animals’ health, record test data and maintain a proper living environment for test animals.

Collecting, washing, and processing caging and equipment used in the housing and care of mice and rats.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in science, and at least some animal-related experience.

Preferred: AALAS ALAT (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) certification. Certification is required to advance and obtain an ALATII level or higher.

Ability to adapt quickly to multiple task operations as well as demonstrated ability to handle routine problems on an independent basis. Experience with understanding and properly performing established procedures.

Ability to lift, push, pull, stand, and manipulate caging and equipment weighing 10 pounds for 1/3 to 2/3 of the day and up to 100 pounds for less than 1/3 of the day.

Compensation/Benefits/Schedule:

This is a full-time on-site Monday – Friday position, with occasional weekends.

You will have the option to choose your set start time between 6:30am and 8:00am.

$21 per hour

Eligibility starting day one for VAI’s generous benefits package.

Relocation assistance is available according to Institute policies.
