The R&D team in Church Stretton, England is part of the Agilent Chemistries and Supplies Division and focuses on developing innovative solutions for rapidly growing segments of the biopharmaceutical industry. In this role, you will focus on developing new products that enable sample preparation, separation and analysis of biomolecules such as therapeutic proteins, oligonucleotides & glycans, vaccines and vectors for gene therapy.

As an R&D Scientist, your main responsibilities will be:

• Plan & conduct experiments with the goal of developing products for the analysis of biomolecules or supporting existing products.

• Document experimental work to allow the efficient recovery of experimental data. Prepares presentations, technical reports, summaries, procedures and protocols.

• Contribute to scientific literature and conferences such as publication of papers, patents and application notes.

• Help to build new capabilities for the R&D lab by planning the acquisition and installation of new equipment, instruments or finding training opportunities.

• Research technical aspects of competitor and academic literature, suggest ideas for new projects and help refine existing project plans.

• Support transition of product design to production and delivery by working in cross-functional teams (marketing, manufacturing and business process roles).

• Engage with other business units within the company (mass spectrometry division, liquid phase separation division, software division) to align research and commercialization activities.

• Share expertise with colleagues.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated individual with the following background:

• PhD Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering or a related field. (Candidates with a Bachelors/Masters degree in the same fields could be considered with a compensating experience)

• Experience developing methods in at least two (preferably more) of the following areas:

> Oligonucleotide analysis by chromatography, mass spectrometry or electrophoresis

> Ion exchange chromatography

> Preparative scale separation of biomolecules

> Analysis of virus-like particles (VLPs), AAVs or lipid nanoparticle vectors

> Analysis of proteins, glycans or lipids by LC/MS

• Experience in designing experiments, performing data analysis, identifying issues and providing plans & solutions.

• Capacity to both understand & solve interrelated issues between assay chemistry, reagents, consumables, hardware, and software.

• Ability to document experimental work and prepare presentations, technical reports, summaries, procedures and protocols

On a personal level, you are agile and able to adapt to different working methods/environments, and you show good problem solving skills. You also have great communication skills to interact with both internal and external partners. You enjoy both working within a team and autonomously. Finally, you are capable of taking ownership and leading a variety of projects.
