The Launching Systems Mechanical Engineer Level II position is an important part of a fast-paced government-industry team located in Arlington, Virginia. Provide your engineering expertise to Navy surface ship missile launcher acquisition while building your professional background and technical capability in support of the world’s greatest Navy.

This position is contingent upon your ability to maintain your active Secret level DoD Secret clearance.

Serco provides technical support to its customer, a defense acquisition program management office which is responsible for the development, acquisition, production, fielding, and lifetime support of critical surface ship launcher systems. This entry-to-junior-level position has aspects of both engineering and engineering management in support of complex Navy systems and will give you the opportunity to learn and grow as you contribute to and take greater responsibility for technical projects.

In this role you will:

Support technical tasking of the program office related to Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) mechanical system design in an acquisition program office setting. Technical work could be under the guidance of or in collaboration with technical staff from the program office, manufacturer, or government field activities or labs.

• Support senior technical personnel and project managers in various technical and management activities related to design, product development, test, or production. Assist in program office management of technical projects, tracking progress against schedules, recording, and coordinating accomplishment of actions, coordinating the development of proposed solutions to technical issues, participating in risk identification and mitigation, supporting technical meetings, and preparing meeting and project reports on behalf of the government program management office.

• Perform basic engineering work in analysis, design, development, evaluation, planning, testing and operation in support of system development or support. Develop mechanical system and component drawings/schematics in SolidWorks® or a comparable toolset from existing drawings or specifications. Use advanced features such as 3D modeling to assist with the integration of mechanical components into overall system design. Check for accessibility, interferences, maintainability, suitability for the shipboard environment, and other factors as directed and guided by more senior engineers.

• Assist with the mechanical design of tooling, test fixtures, automated test equipment, and related support equipment.

• Apply standard technical concepts, techniques, and procedures to assist in the design and development of technical products.

• Work under the supervision and technical guidance of more experienced team members but will be given the opportunity to take on challenging engineering assignments and run with them.

• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Bachelor's degree plus two to four years of related experience. Degree must be in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

An active Secret level security clearance is required to be considered.

Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, methods, and techniques.

Basic knowledge of engineering design software such as SolidWorks, or similar.

Basic internal team communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

Additional desired experience and skills:

Previous government program office or a strong internship in mechanical/systems/marine engineering desired.

Experience with collaboration tools such as MS SharePoint, Teams, and similar.
