Job Overview

The Survey Instrument Man is responsible for assisting the Party Chief as directed. This position performs field tasks, including but not limited to; instrument setup/takedown, driving stakes, brush clearing, tree cutting, pipeline probing, and prepares the job site for the survey.

Job Responsibilities

Understand procedures and operation of all surveying equipment, i.e. Static GPS, RTK, GPS, conventional total station, data collectors, levels, pipeline locator, and magnetometer.

Ensure that all equipment is in proper working order.

Provide daily maintenance and security of equipment.

Report all damaged and defective equipment to the appropriate Supervisor.

Supervise and assist with loading of equipment, boats, and/or off-road vehicles.

Mentor/train rodmen on proper survey procedures and operation of equipment.

Assist Party Chief as needed with daily operations including review of project-related drawings.

Complete daily status forms prior to departure from office.

Participate and conduct JSA and BBS observations.

Adhere to MPH Safety Policy and Procedures.

Proper storage of equipment.

Monitor job area safety.

Preparation of field notes; understanding how to write and read field notes and maps.

Pay attention to the access route to the job site in the event they must drive out.

Assume responsibilities of the party chief in his/her absence.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required.

1 year of field experience required for the Instrument Man position.

No experience is needed for the Rodman position.

College Associates in Survey/Mapping preferred.

Able to perform well with minimal supervision in a team environment.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge of overhead and underground utilities, including power lines, is a plus.

Knowledge of total station, GPS, and data collection, with the ability to adapt to new equipment and technologies is a plus.

Qualifications

Ability to work outside in all seasons for extended periods of time. This position requires both inside and outside work.

Ability to travel overnight to various parts of Texas and possibly surrounding states.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Ability to work as a member of a customer service-oriented team.

Effective communication skills, oral and written.

Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must pass a physical exam and drug screen.

Working Conditions

Some heavy physical effort is required. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the facility and job site. The employee is required to walk, have the full use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, and climb and balance.

Must be capable of lifting and transporting up to 40 pounds for a period of up to 30 minutes at a time and incrementally throughout the day. Must be able to position equipment as directed. Must be able to drive stakes, using a mallet or sledgehammer, for construction purposes.

Must have the ability to ascend/descend slopes, traverse difficult terrain, climb fencing, walk across creeks or walk across creek beds.

Must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods.

Must have the ability to measure, handle supplies, pull manhole covers with a hook, operate tools such as a machete, operate a bush hook to clear underbrush, and use a shovel.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must also have the ability to distinguish shapes, sizes, distances, and color.

Verbal and written communication is required, as well as the ability to hear.
