OUR CLIENT

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center serves as the primary health care provider for more than 113,000 Veterans in southeast Texas. Veterans from around the country are referred to the MEDVAMC for specialized diagnostic care, radiation therapy, surgery, and medical treatment including cardiovascular surgery, gastrointestinal endoscopy, nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, and treatment of spinal cord injury and diseases.

The MEDVAMC is home to a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Clinic; Network Polytrauma Center; an award-winning Cardiac and General Surgery Program; Liver Transplant Center; VA Epilepsy and Cancer Centers of Excellence; VA Substance Abuse Disorder Quality Enhancement Research Initiative; Health Services Research & Development Center of Innovation; VA Rehabilitation Research of Excellence focusing on mild to moderate traumatic brain injury; Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center; and one of the VA’s six Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Centers. In late 2012, the MEDVAMC received official designation as a Kidney Transplant Center

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The RN will provide a variety of critical care/specialty nursing functions in support of the VA in Houston, TX. Duties will include but are not limited to:

Assess the health care needs of the patient/resident and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals

• Assess and act on significant changes in the patient’s/resident’s health condition

• Carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks

• Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient/resident medical record

• Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and in accordance with policy and procedure.

• Identify and act on predictable needs of the patient/resident

• Meet the health care needs of patient/resident by assessing and assisting the patient/resident to meet expressed needs

• meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and/or families

• Prioritize and complete tasks within the RN’s assigned shift

• Perform head-to-toe assessment

• Insert IV lines

• Care and management of peripheral and central lines, including PICC lines

• Administer medication including IVs

• Coordinate and participate in admission and discharge of patient

• Measure vital signs/hemodynamic monitoring including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.

• Perform wound care including dressing changes (sterile and non-sterile), and obtaining wound cultures as necessary

• Obtain and deliver specimens to lab

• Perform tracheostomy care

• Perform non-acute and/or acute ventilator care, if needed

• Perform suctioning including oral, nasogastic, and tracheostomy

• Perform deep suctioning, which may include obtaining specimens

• Assess for and administer tube feedings

• Assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including catheters, colostomies, and digital stimulation

• Educate patients/residents and/or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration including indications for the medication.

• Respond and assist in an emergency situation

• Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program

• Licensed in any State, Territory, Commonwealth of the U.S. or D.C.

• BLS and ACLS

• Willing to work 8- or 12- hour shifts and be available for WHEN shifts (weekends, holidays, evenings and nights)

• Must be willing to support units requiring coverage

• 1 year of experience (within the past 5 years) in any of the following Specialty Care areas:

Emergency Department

Med/Surg

ICU/CCU

• Ability to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills

• Ability to perform in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.

• Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10ft

• Must be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
