Director of Laboratory Operations (Healthcare Services)

Job Responsibilities

Position Title: Director, Laboratory Operations

Location: Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

The Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for leading and managing the day to day activities of the laboratory to assure operational excellence and maintain, standardize, monitor, and improve internal laboratory processes.

Additional responsibilities of the Director of Laboratory Services include:

Provides leadership and guidance in the execution of the short- and long-term goals that are aligned with the strategic vision of the Laboratory Medical and Executive Director.

Ensure budgets and schedules are aligned with leadership goals and responsible for the oversight of planning, staffing, budgeting, expense priority management, and recommendation and implementation changes of current methods.

Work with Laboratory Managers, Supervisors and Leads to define, monitor and improve quality, efficiency and communication of clinical services through the evaluation of methods, performance and quality, and by recommending and implementing indicated changes.

Ensures that the laboratory department maintains files and records according to state, federal, HIPAA, JCAHO, and organizational guidelines.

Monitor and maintain “inspection-readiness” through regular auditing of clinical laboratory operations and records.

Ensures through collaborative effort with appropriate nursing and physician leadership personnel in all laboratory testing sites and functions comply with laboratory regulatory standards, including but not limited to those established by CLIA’88, CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, AABB, OIG, CMS, FDA, and maintain appropriate records and documentation.

Provide leadership, guidance and coaching for all direct reports to maintain an engaged and productive workforce; partnering with Human Resources on employee matters.

Directs and supports selection of personnel in assigned areas; conducts ongoing assessments and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development of staff to include a workforce “staff” plan for areas of responsibilities.

Develops and implements monitoring processes to ensure that department’s performance is consistent with the organization’s metrics-based management performance system. Ensures that strategies and processes exist to maximize financial resource management, including development and achievement of financial performance objectives. Prepares and monitors annual budget to ensure appropriate performance against objectives; anticipates opportunities for new services and programs and reduction of expenses in the organization.

Provides regular meetings and other forms of communication with reporting personnel and other affected staff members including daily huddles and/or internal customer rounding to assure awareness of operational and organization-wide issues.

Performs personnel management functions i.e., assess qualifications, hiring, orient and train, supervise, assess skills and competence, evaluate performance, counsel and initiate termination.

Maintains interactive communication with patients and families and effectively addresses conflict and opportunities for improvement. Facilitates the flow of communication within the area and across the network. Develops and updates policies and procedures.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Director of Laboratory Operations (Healthcare Services)

Job Requirements

Successful candidates for the Director of Laboratory Services must be certified in the area of medical laboratory science by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or equivalent (AMT, AAB, etc.).

Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related healthcare science field (Master’s Degree Preferred)

3+ years in clinical laboratory diagnostics

Management or Supervisory experience

Experience with managing a budget and development of a budget and high level of accountability on that budget

Lean 6 Sigma experience is a plus

High level of understanding for laboratory processes and how a high volume/busy laboratory runs
