Responsibilities and Duties
Provides courteous service to patients, general public, and other care providers.
Organizes tasks in a safe and efficient manner with indirect supervision.
Reports changes in the patient’s mental or physical condition to his/her immediate supervisor by phone or in person.
Performs passive range of motion exercises and assists with exercises prescribed and supervised by appropriate professionals.
Assists client’s with personal health care tasks as assigned, including bathing, dressing, shaving, shampooing, and care of the mouth, skin, and nails.
Assist patients with bedpans, urinals, bedside commodes or to the bathroom.
Assists with safe ambulation, positioning, and lifting.
Uses assistive equipment such as hydraulic lift, gait belt or wheelchair as required.
Understands/recognizes: the importance of nutritious meals and assists with feeding when necessary, the importance of following a special diet when prescribed, and encourages the patient to follow the diet plan closely. Prepares meals as directed by professional.
Takes temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, and blood pressure when requested.
Assists with other patient care procedures, i.e., non-sterile dressing changes, decubitus care, diabetic urine and specimen collections when instructed by RN.
Arranges diversional activities encouraging patient’s mental alertness, when appropriate.
Participates in case conferences of patients and families being served.
Completes required records for documentation including charting of patient care activities and time records reflecting accurate hours worked and mileage.
Participates in training sessions and continuing education as required by the agency to upgrade skills and acquire new ones.
Assist in maintaining a healthful, safe environment by identifying and removing health hazards.
Encourages the patient to be as independent as possible according to the aide care plan.
Gives simple emotional and psychological support to the patient and members of the household.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
Complies with agency infection control policies and procedures.
Works cooperatively with personnel of other community agencies involved in the patient’s care.
Follows referring agency policies and procedures as defined in the agency’s Policy and Procedure manuals.
Does not perform tasks outside the scope of practice deemed safe and permissible by this agency and the State.
Qualifications and Skills
Certificate of Home Care/Nursing Assistant training program or competency evaluation approved by federal and/or state regulatory agencies. Current listing with the NC Division of Facility Services as a Nurse Aide I.
One year of current experience in a home, hospital or nursing facility setting preferred.
High school graduate or GED preferred.
