Housekeeping/Kitchen Floater

Sacred Heart Retreat House further defines this mission to include the following specific goals:

• Offering programs in keeping with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church

• Imparting our Carmelite Spirituality of facilitating an encounter with God through extended and day retreats, classes, workshops, and conferences to individuals and groups of all ages.

• Providing facilities for both silent and interactive retreat experiences.

Purpose of Position:

The primary purpose of position is to perform various services in relation to the general upkeep and cleanliness of the buildings, kitchen, and equipment of Sacred Heart Retreat House.

Job Functions:

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

Laundry

• Washes, dries, irons (as needed), and folds bed linens, towels, cleaning rags, blankets, bedspreads, and guests clothing. Commercial and residential type equipment is used.

Guests’ Room Cleaning

• Cleans guests rooms following set procedures which includes removal of trash, dusting, wiping surfaces, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cleaning windows, making beds, and bathroom cleaning and sanitation.

• Uses designated materials and cleaning chemicals to perform cleaning tasks.

• Checks rooms when cleaning for anything requiring repair. Notifies supervisor according to set procedure using maintenance forms.

• Restocks standard set supplies in rooms.

• Prepares rooms for guests’ arrival including placing complementary and promotional items in designated spots of room.

Inventory

• Conducts weekly and yearly inventory of linen and supplies as requested by supervisor.

• Notifies supervisor in advance when supplies or linen are running low in order to assure timely re-ordering.

Cleaning Public Areas

• Cleans all public areas including meeting rooms and halls, dining rooms as assigned, offices as assigned, restrooms, and interior corridors.

• Cleans according to set procedures which include those listed above.

• Cleans using designated material and cleaning chemicals.

• Monitors public areas during use as assigned to maintain cleanliness.

Outdoor Cleaning:

• Assists with cleaning projects outdoors including but not limited to wiping hand rails, tables, and chairs.

• Arranges furniture in meeting rooms and halls according to designated set ups for guests.

• Assists in moving items as needed for the various functions of the Retreat House.

Cross Training:

• Is cross trained to be able to assist in kitchen tasks including manual and machine dish washing and food preparation including preparing meals for retreats/programs as scheduled. The Kitchen/Housekeeping Supervisor will assign kitchen duties as needed.

Kitchen Duties:

• Washes pots and pans and other dishes in dish room.

• Sweeps and mops all kitchen floors, wipes down sinks and counter tops at end of day.

• Overall Deep Cleaning of a commercial kitchen.

• Serves food on serving line or dining room as assigned.

• Cleans and prepares various foods for cooking or serving.

General:

• May perform other housekeeping and kitchen duties, as assigned, to meet the day to day needs of Sacred Heart Retreat House.

Education

• High School Graduate required

• At least 1-2 years previous experience in a similar job position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Must be able to able to work in a team environment

• Must be able to receive and implement constructive feedback from others

• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, retreatants, guests, benefactors, vendors and the general public.

• Must possess the ability to plan and organize as necessary for carrying out job functions to the highest quality standards of the industry.

• Must possess excellent interpersonal relations and written/oral communication skills to communicate with both internal contacts in the organization and external contacts.

• High sense of urgency with ability to work in a fast-paced team environment anticipating and adjusting to challenges.

• Able to follow directions, manage multiple tasks, and respond to urgent requests in a positive manner.

• Must be able to operate industrial cleaning equipment like vacuums, washing machines and dryers.

• Must be able to operate basic kitchen equipment

• Must be able to read and follow safety instructions as well as Company policies and procedures.

• Employee must have and maintain a ServSafe Food Handler certification in accordance with CA law.

Working Conditions:

• Be on feet for extending periods of time either walking or standing in one place

• Intermittently walk 4 acre campuses

• Must work with cleaning supplies and other chemicals on a daily basis.

• Works with industrial cleaning equipment like vacuums and washing machines.

• Exposure to dust and chemicals that are potential irritants

• Must be able to work in a fast paced kitchen environment

• Exposure to various temperatures from hot ovens to walk in freezers ranging from approximately 32-125 degrees.

• Must be able to work a flexible work schedule but typically between the hours of 11 am-8pm and some nights and weekends.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

• Must be able to be on feet and move constantly throughout the workday

• Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met

• Must be able to bend, squat, crouch, and reach overhead

• Must be able to climb a ladder of at least 10 feet

• Must be able to push, pull, move, a minimum of 25 pounds with or without accommodation.

• Must be able to safely navigate multiple stairs, inclines and slopes
