Context And Mission

Within the Copernicus Climate Climate Change Service (C3S), the Evaluation and Quality Control (EQC) function plays a critical role to ensure that the service meets the needs of a range of users for high-quality data and information, and in proposing the necessary evolution of the service itself, while shaping the research agenda to attend the most important challenges detected.

The Earth Sciences Department of the BSC will be in charge of developing and implementing a system to evaluate the quality of the operational data from the C3S, both observations, seasonal forecasts, and climate projections, as well as the quality of the toolbox and the whole service.

The successful applicant will join the BSC Computational Earth Sciences group to help with the practical implementation of such an evaluation system based on the work done in the previous projects.

Moreover, the applicant will contribute to the implementation of the ongoing strategy to develop the Earth Sciences Department tools, thereby increasing the applicability and international visibility and hence the impact of the research coming out of current and future projects.

Key Duties

Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, python, etc.)



BSc in computer science, telecommunications, physics or a related discipline

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

Excellent computing skills in R or other interpreted languages

Good programming skills to manage big and collaborative projects and experience with git

Good knowledge of climate data formats (GRIB, NetCDF)

Previous experience in HPC architecture and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) will be valued

Knowledge of workflow design is not necessary but will be valued


Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both climate and computer scientists

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to take initiatives, prioritize the tasks and work under set deadlines

Ability to work both independently and within a team

Ability to learn and adapt to multiple programming languages easily

Fluency in English, both speaking and writing


The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
