Medical Lab Scientist Lab Lead Educator - RT

This position enhances professional practice through planning, developing and conducting education, development and education, competency and training for laboratory and other key laboratory services staff. Evaluates effectiveness of programs and provides guidance to staff and key leaders based on results. Facilitates assessment and identification of ongoing learning needs for staff development programs. Designs and delivers programs that support the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic goals implemented. This position also performs all essential functions of a Med Lab Scientist as defined by the department.


1. Ensures seamless orientation of new and/or transferring laboratory staff with oversight and influence of the orientation experience. Supports and develops staff including leads, new graduates and experienced MLS staff while acting as a role model for proficient clinical practice, patient safety and evidence-based practice. Supports an environment and infrastructure that promotes professional growth and advanced skills.

2. Develops and implements the Laboratory’s “Grow Our Own” strategic workforce planning and development to support the achievement of maintaining appropriate staff, workforce goals, quality initiatives and clinical practice. Critically assesses, plans, develops and delivers clinical curriculum, developmental programs and services. Facilitates learning utilizing multiple modalities.

3. Coordinates and facilitates annual competencies. Evaluates learning effectiveness using standardized outcome measurements. Utilizes performance measures and workforce needs to drive education plans and learning strategies. Maintains appropriate documentation.

4. Coordinates, trains, and evaluates students in technical education programs for clinical rotations/externships in cooperation with laboratory area supervisors/managers and other clinical staff.

5. Collaborates with department leaders to provide educational opportunities that satisfy performance goals and objectives and enhance quality management activities. Explores innovation, and embraces and utilizes technology to deliver on learning needs and accomplish learning goals.

6. Acts as a role model of clinical practice. Establishes visibility and credibility. Leads and participates on assigned committees and teams. Participates in unit or facility shared leadership.

7. Take an active role in all department quality control/assurance (QC/QA) activities. Assists department management with implementation of new QC/QA policies and continuous quality improvement programs in accordance with regulatory standards.

8. Performs all duties of a Med Lab Scientist as defined by the department.

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. IP - Typical Indirect Patient Care Environment: (CSPD Instrument Technician, Lab Technician, Pharmacist)

• Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.

• May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.

• Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids.

• Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.

• May require periodic to frequent use of personal computer.

• Off-site travel may be required.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (Submission Summary)

1. Baccalaureate degree (BA or BS) in Medical Technology or clinically related biological science.

2. Successful examination and registration as a Med Lab Scientist with ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or equivalent.

3. Requires at least 3-5 years of experience as a medical laboratory scientist in Laboratory setting.

4. Must be able to communicate effectively, in both oral and written formats.

5. Working knowledge of ancillary and support department responsibilities.

6. Excellent presentation, facilitation and computer technology skills, strong organization and communication skills and the ability to take initiative, solve problems and improve processes.

7. Muat have a current MLS/ASCP certification?

8. Medical Lab Scientist with ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification

9. Willing to relocate to Fairbanks, Alaska.
