About The Team

The SOE(Scrum of Earth) team within Nationwide Financials' Digital Servicing organization focuses on delivering end-to-end, high-impact customer and financial professional products for Annuities. SOE engineers own and evolve critical servicing experiences such as PIE JET Pod and Fixed Funding Pod and you will be embedded in a true cross-functional product team, partnering closely with business leaders, CX/UX, architects, and fellow engineers to deliver modern, scalable solutions with strong visibility.

Role Overview

SOE Team at Nationwide Financial is seeking a Software Engineer with 2+ years of experience to help design, build, and support customer-facing and internal applications serving members, financial professionals, and internal associates across NationwideFinancial.com and Nationwide.com.

As a full-stack engineer on the SOE team, you will contribute across the entire lifecycle—design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing evolution—of strategic product journeys. This role offers the opportunity to work on modern engineering initiatives and major product improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Build and evolve end-to-end customer and financial professional journeys, not just individual components or isolated applications

Partner daily with product, UX, architecture, and business stakeholders to make fast, informed decisions

Design and implement scalable, secure, and performant full-stack solutions

Contribute to major product launches and modernization efforts

Support and improve existing services while continuously raising engineering quality and consistency

Use modern engineering practices, including code reviews and automation

Leverage Generative AI tools (such as GitHub Copilot) to improve productivity and code quality

We're Looking For Someone Who Has

Required Technical Experience

Angular

TypeScript, JavaScript

Java

Spring Framework

RESTful APIs and API platforms (Apigee a plus)

Cloud platforms (AWS and Kubernetes experience preferred)

Relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle)

Nice-To-Have Experience

GraphQL

Kafka or other event-driven architectures

Agile & DevOps Practices

Experience working within Agile teams

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Concourse, Harness, GitHub Actions)

Strong interest in automation and improving software delivery processes

This will be a hybrid role based out of the Columbus, OH or Des Moines, IA office. The team comes in Mondays and Tuesdays for collaboration.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you'll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Key Responsibilities

Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.

Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.

Manages project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Two or more years of analysis and technology experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle moderately sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
