The RA will assist the PI in conducting two projects. One project is studying the effects of certain drugs on bone loss in ovariectomized mice. This will require the ability to perform survival ovariectomy surgery in mice. In addition, it will require the ability to inject unanesthetized mice and to harvest tissues from mice post-mortem.

A second set of experiments involves examining the transcription factors induced by cytokines in osteoclasts that participate in the transcriptional regulation of the gene, sphingosine-1-kinase. This requires familiarity with cell culture, including isolating primary murine bone marrow cells. It also requires expertise in performing Western blots and electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Finally, knowing how to perform PCR and RT-PCR is required.
