Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for residential, commercial, and industrial electrical construction projects. This role analyses project
plans, specifications, and bid documents to determine material, labour, and equipment costs, ensuring profitable and successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
• Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to prepare detailed quantity take offs
• Develop comprehensive cost estimates including labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead
• Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing
• Identify value engineering opportunities to remain competitive
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required
• Prepare and submit complete bid packages by required deadlines
• Maintain cost databases and historical pricing records
• Collaborate with project managers and field teams during project turnover
• Analyse completed projects to compare estimated vs. actual costs
• Assist in change order pricing and scope revisions
Qualifications
• 3+ years of electrical estimating experience (residential and commercial preferred – with some knowledge of industrial)
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, NEC codes, and construction practices
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications
• Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Accubid, McCormick, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar)
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills
• Excellent attention to detail and time management
• Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Effective communication and negotiation skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with design-build and negotiated projects
• Knowledge of local market pricing and vendors
Work Environment
• Office-based with occasional site visits
• May require extended hours during peak bid periods
Core Competencies (Mandatory):
• Ability to create detailed drawings of assemblies for customer approval and shop construction
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting P&IDs
• Expertise in modelling process piping and structural steel assemblies using Autodesk
• Ability to implement customer piping and other specifications during the design process
• Strong knowledge of process equipment such as pressure vessels, pumps, pipes, valves, fittings, and structural steel shapes
Skills and Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field
• Mechanical Engineering BS degree preferred
• Skilled in estimating software, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, PID, and 3D modelling
• Excellent computer skills, with a strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, including
Frame Generator and Tube & Pipe modules
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Working Conditions:
• Standard office environment, 95%
• Field construction environment, 5%
• Manufacturing/factory environment

• Field/in-plant physical activities (e.g., climbing, lifting, standing, and walking
continually)

Experience:
• Mechanical Engineering: 3 years (Preferred)
