We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Microbiologist for a contract engagement. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating and performing a full range of microbiological examinations and analyses to support public health initiatives. This role requires an individual who can work independently as an expert in their assigned area, ensuring high-quality results while adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct microbiological examinations and analyses, including culture, biochemical tests, EIA, serotyping, PCR, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of clinical specimens for the isolation and identification of enteric bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, Vibrio, Listeria, Campylobacter).
• Strictly follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, and reporting.
• Perform nucleic acid extraction from specimens and samples using both manual and automated methods.
• Utilize molecular techniques such as PCR, sequencing, MALDI-TOF, and WGS.
• Evaluate, interpret, and validate laboratory results, and assist in preparing epidemiological or statistical reports.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and a comprehensive system for submitted samples.
• Conduct quality control (QC) checks on methods, materials, and equipment, ensuring strict adherence to QC policies.
• Manage laboratory supply inventory to ensure testing requirements are consistently met.
• Maintain competency in all trained areas and cross-train in molecular, viral, and serological techniques to provide backup capacity as needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
• Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of microbiology and related sub-specialties.
• Proficiency in current scientific methods, testing procedures, and the application of these methods to solve laboratory problems.
• Ability to operate a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated analysis techniques.
• Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles.
• Familiarity with relevant state and federal laboratory regulations (e.g., CLIA).
• Ability to meet requirements for personnel certification as a technologist pursuant to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in proficiency testing programs and recognize Quality Assurance (QA) issues.
• Experience in compiling, analyzing, and evaluating complex laboratory data.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
• This is an onsite position.
• Work involves handling potentially dangerous specimens; adherence to safety standards and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
• PPE may be cumbersome and require extra concentration during routine manipulations.
• The laboratory environment may experience significant temperature fluctuations; the ability to maintain a clear thought process and perform precise work under these conditions is required.
Required / Desired Skills
• Must have a Bachelor's degree in Science, preferably biology. Required - 2 Years
• Must have 2 years of lab experience. Required - 2 Years
• Experience in a Molecular Biology lab is preferred. Required - 1 Years
