Temporary Highway Maintenance Worker

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is now hiring summer temporary maintenance workers! Whether you're looking for temporary work for extra income through the summer months or looking to test out a new position prior to making a long-term commitment, we encourage you to apply! Pay rate of $19.941 per hour to start. If utilized by the Agency, and at the discretion of the District, those who currently possess a CDL may be promoted to the Worker Senior level at the rate of $21.470 per hour. D6 Work Locations hiring in west central Nebraska: North Platte, Wallace, Broken Bow, Ansley, Oconto, Lexington, Gothenburg, Mullen, Arthur, Hyannis, Stapleton, Thedford, Ogallala, Big Springs. Summer positions, temporary, until November 30, 2026. Hours may depend on the weather, may be more or less than 40 hours per week. Job duties include:

Operating tractors and mowers to mow and trim vegetation on NDOT Right of Way.

Performing pavement preservation activities or traffic control procedures.

Assisting in the maintenance and care of the State Highway system or its infrastructure.

Being a crew member for Roadway Striping Operations, a Fence Repair Crew, or a Sign Maintenance Crew, repairing roadside features.

Assisting in repairing or maintaining pavement, culverts, or bridges.

Manually providing highway traffic control by flagging traffic around a work zone or driving a pilot vehicle.

Installing temporary traffic control signs or devices or responding to emergency situations to assist in traffic incident management.

Performing routine care or maintenance to the department's fleet.

Safely removing objects from roadway under traffic.

Driving department vehicles or equipment as trained for Transportation Maintenance and Operations activities.

Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:

Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.

Preferred qualifications: A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment. May require out of town, overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic. Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within 45 minutes of notification.
