A CNC programmer writes code to automate power-driven machines that cut and finish metal such as lathes, grinders, and mills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a CNC Programmer

o Creates instructions for machinists.

o Reviews 3D CAD design blueprints.

o Makes calculations for programming including where materials should be cut.

o Translates instructions into a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) program..

o Checks completed programs by running simulations or tests.

o Prepares geometric layout of designs using the proper software.

o Determines the sequence of operations in a program.

o Chooses cutting tools that will be needed.

o Analyzes job order and performs necessary calculations.

o Writes programs and modifies existing ones for increased efficiency.

o Analyzes and selects speeds and cutting tools for programs.

o Makes improvements to set up times for a task and contouring of complex shapes.

o Simplifies tooling time for workers and increases productivity for the client.

o Evaluates all completed designs to validate their functions and ensure they successfully reduce time and money for the client.

o Monitors all programs to make sure they follow blueprint instructions and safely and successfully complete the task.

o Complies with all safety rules and regulations.


" Associates Degree or equivalent training in machining program

" 5+ years of related machining and programmer experience

" Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

" Detail oriented

" Read and interpret blueprints

" Works well individually and within a team
