Registered Veterinary Technician
Care Pet Clinic (Columbus, OH)
Duties and Responsibilities:
Review patient medical records, verify history, and accurately enter treatments and charges into the practice management system.
Safely restrain animals for examinations and procedures as needed.
Maintain and distribute client education materials in an organized, efficient manner.
Draw blood and access veins quickly and safely, prioritizing patient comfort during all diagnostic procedures.
Perform laboratory testing on blood, urine, and other samples using appropriate equipment and software, following all medical orders.
Assist the Veterinarian with inpatient care, including daily treatments, IV fluid calculations and monitoring, blood draws, and placement of urinary catheters.
Induce and monitor anesthesia according to established protocols.
Administer medications and feed patients as directed.
Communicate clearly with clients regarding medications, potential complications, and important care instructions.
Use the computer system to enter, update, and reference patient information.
Conduct diagnostic procedures such as radiographs, CBCs, blood profiles, urinalysis, heartworm tests, FELV/FIV tests, fecal exams, cultures, and fungal testing.
Document all test results promptly and deliver them to the appropriate team members.
Prepare and package laboratory specimens for shipment according to hospital standards.
Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., otoscopes, nail trimmers).
Schedule or perform routine maintenance on laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
Maintain exam room cleanliness at all times.
Help establish laboratory standards, update workflows, and train staff as needed.
Assist with general animal care and handling.
Perform all aspects of radiology, including patient positioning, data entry, and preparing images for referral or email.
Obtain medical histories and record patient vital signs.
Complete departmental housekeeping duties.
Admit and discharge patients, ensuring accurate communication and documentation.
Process prescription refills, including in-house, call-in, and online pharmacy requests.
Lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The technician must be able to multi-task. They must be able to think quickly on their feet. They must be able to develop positive working relationships with clients and co-workers.
Skills:
The technician must have skills/knowledge on how to perform dental cleanings, charting teeth abnormalities, anesthesia induction and monitoring, surgical preparation, intravenous catheter placement, vaccination administration, venipuncture, in-house lab work, and filling prescriptions. Our new Team Member must work well with others as well as independently, take initiative and thrive in a busy work environment.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of OH is required.
