Campus Security Officer
The Campus Security Officer (CSO) plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of all Virginia Peninsula Community College locations. This position is responsible for patrolling campus buildings and grounds while fostering an environment that supports the academic mission of the college. CSOs remain vigilant to potential emergencies, provide immediate response when needed, and offer escort services and other forms of public assistance to students, staff, and visitors. Their presence helps maintain a secure and welcoming atmosphere across campus. This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX). The position may require an occasional alternative work schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
Special Assignments - May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications - Must be a U.S. citizen. High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) Possess a valid Virginia operator's license. Successful completion of the Department of Criminal Justice Campus Security Officer Course within 180 days of hiring Complete CPR/First Aid and AED Certification within 90 days of hiring Complete Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Independent Studies ICS100 Introduction to Incident Command within 90 days of hiring. Ability to successfully complete the Commonwealth of Virginia-accredited Bloodborne Pathogens class within 30 days of hiring; Ability to work at all campus locations, Educational Sites, and/or Special Function Venues Limited to 1,500 hours annually. Knowledge Knowledgeable of safety and security concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques Working knowledge of customer service practices and principles · Knowledge of security "best practices" and OSHA standards Skills Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service oriented. Demonstrated skills in security vehicles, Golf Carts, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of security equipment. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to Successfully conduct security patrols without supervision. Complete routine paperwork. · Follow and give oral and written instructions. Meet physical demands of the position, to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations. Understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures. Detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel. Obtain and maintain certification as a campus security officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Perform foot patrols on any campus location.
