Electrical Journeyman

Job Description

Industrial Journeyman Electrician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex electrical systems, motors, and controls in industrial environments like factories or plants. They work with high-voltage equipment, read blueprints, and ensure compliance with strict safety codes and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards

Core Responsibilities

Installation & Maintenance: Install, repair, and maintain conduit systems, wiring, motors, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and lighting systems.

Troubleshooting: Diagnose complex electrical issues using testing devices like RMS meters to minimize downtime in industrial production.

System Testing & Commissioning: Perform electrical commissioning, including testing of high-voltage systems, switchgears, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Safety Compliance: Strictly adhere to OSHA guidelines, perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.

Documentation: Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.

Essential Requirements

Licensure: Valid Journeyman Electrician License (e.g., Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation - TDLR).

Experience: Generally 3-5 years of experience in industrial or heavy industrial environments.

Technical Knowledge: Proficient in 3-phase power, AC/DC motors, and conduit bending.

Safety Training: OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification is often required.

Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, work at heights, and lift up to 50-75 pounds.

Typical Work Environment

Industries: Manufacturing plants, chemical plants, mining, and large-scale, automated production facilities.

Conditions: Can be dusty, noisy, hot, or cold, requiring heavy-duty PPE.

Schedule: Often involves 10-12 hour shifts, night shifts, or on-call hours.

Common Skills

Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and electrical test instruments.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently or lead apprentices
