Tool & Die Maker

Location: Lansing, MI

Shifts Available:

- 1st Shift: 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM

- 2nd Shift: 4:30 PM – 3:00 AM

Pay: $32-40/hour. There is a $.50 increase for 2nd shift.

Long term contract to hire

Position Overview

The Tool & Die Maker is responsible for building tools from solid model designs, determining necessary machining processes, and providing guidance to apprentices and staff. This role requires leadership skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, cost-efficient results that meet company and customer standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Manage all aspects of tool build or tryout; independently build line, transfer, and progressive tooling.

- Perform component and conventional builds.

- Identify, resolve, and implement solutions for process or tooling issues and drive best practices.

- Oversee and ensure quality loop processes and adherence to timelines.

- Collaborate and communicate effectively across departments and teams.

- Troubleshoot die issues related to product quality.

- Operate presses and run tool room equipment.

- Tryout: Spotting, set timing, and troubleshoot problematic tools in-press; work with drawing operations related to metal flow and formability.

- Perform welding as needed (tool steels, TIG, MIG).

- Attend daily and weekly meetings.

- Train and develop employees from general laborers through apprenticeship to journeyman certification and beyond.

- Provide leadership in employee relations, communication, coaching, training, and development.

- Lead fast problem resolution for continual improvement and better working relationships.

- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.

- Promote efficient department interaction and setup.

- Ensure and report product, process, or service quality issues to team leader.

- Perform additional tasks as required by company or customer needs.

Education & Experience

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- Minimum of two years of related work experience, or equivalent education, experience, and training.

- Journeyman Tool & Die Maker Certificate or equivalent required (Journeyman's Card desired).

- Additional company-provided training as needed.

- Manual machine equipment

- Presses

- Fork trucks

- Computers and printers

- Application software (Windows/Microsoft Office/Current Business Systems)

- Photocopiers

- Email

- Other equipment as needed

- Excellent judgment and initiative to determine effective work methods and tools; ability to research and apply historical practices and examples.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

- Able to operate design viewers and perform basic computer tasks (Microsoft Office, email, etc.).
