Job Title: Maintenance Electrician - 3rd Shift
Job Description
This role supports a long-established custom plastic profile extrusion manufacturer that serves transportation, agriculture, energy, refrigeration, retail, commercial, and building industries. As a Maintenance Electrician on 3rd shift, you will troubleshoot, repair, and maintain production equipment and facility systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations in a high-volume plastics manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Perform troubleshooting operations to diagnose the condition of facilities, equipment, and machinery, and take timely action to complete repairs and adjustments.
Make precise setups and adjustments on production equipment to support efficient and consistent operation.
Repair and maintain a wide range of equipment, including extruders, saws, polars, conveyors, vacuums, loaders, pumps, gear boxes, and related systems.
Carry out primarily reactive maintenance while also performing a broad variety of maintenance, testing, inspection, and repair tasks as needed.
Ensure the safe repair and operation of equipment so that machinery does not pose a risk of injury to employees or cause damage to equipment or materials.
Accurately enter work hours into the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) each day and properly sign out inventory to work orders.
Use voltmeters and other test instruments to measure and verify voltage, current, resistance, and other electrical parameters.
Change motors and read wiring diagrams to correctly install, connect, and commission equipment.
Inspect, repair, and replace gear boxes, bearings, seals, mechanical drives, and power transmission components.
Service water pumps and gear pumps, including understanding priming requirements and proper operation.
Align motor couplings, sprockets, and pulleys to ensure smooth and reliable power transmission.
Install and adjust drive chains, use chain breakers, and apply appropriate chain links and tensioning methods.
Test fuses and replace them as needed to restore proper circuit protection.
Read and interpret electrical and mechanical blueprints and prints to guide troubleshooting and installations.
Perform basic pipefitting tasks such as gluing PVC, sweating copper, and working with drain lines.
Support the operation and basic maintenance of heat exchangers.
Operate within electrical control panels to rewire, troubleshoot, and work with disconnects, relays, limit switches, and related components.
Troubleshoot 480V three-phase motors and variable frequency drives (VFDs), identifying and resolving issues safely and efficiently.
Read ladder logic diagrams and use meters to diagnose control and automation issues.
Differentiate between incremental and absolute encoders and apply this knowledge during troubleshooting.
Participate in a practical hands-on electrical test using a control panel with multiple components, working through relays, limit switches, and indicator lights to identify and resolve faults.
Respond to simple and complex fault conditions (for example, diagnosing why an indicator light is not turning on) and walk through a methodical process to restore proper function.
Essential Skills
Industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving plastics extrusion or similar continuous process equipment.
Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Demonstrated comfort troubleshooting and working with variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Ability to safely troubleshoot 480V three-phase motors and related power circuits.
Proficiency in voltage reading and using meters to measure voltage, current, and resistance.
Ability to operate confidently inside control panels, including rewiring, troubleshooting, and working with disconnects, relays, and limit switches.
Ability to read and interpret ladder logic diagrams for troubleshooting control systems.
Understanding of AC and DC voltage and their applications in industrial environments.
Ability to use a voltmeter correctly and interpret readings for diagnostic purposes.
Capability to change motors and accurately read wiring diagrams to ensure proper installation.
Knowledge of relay logic and PLC troubleshooting sufficient to identify and correct control issues.
Understanding of the difference between incremental and absolute encoders and how they function in control systems.
Mechanical aptitude in working with gear boxes, bearings, seals, and power transmission components.
Experience with pumps, including water and gear pumps, and understanding of priming and operation.
Ability to align motor couplings, sprockets, and pulleys to maintain proper mechanical alignment.
Ability to change and adjust drive chains, including using chain breakers and selecting appropriate chain links.
Skill in reading electrical and mechanical prints and blueprints to guide installations and repairs.
Basic pipefitting skills, including gluing PVC, sweating copper, and working with drain lines.
Familiarity with heat exchanger operation and basic maintenance.
Comfort participating in hands-on electrical assessments involving relays, limit switches, indicator lights, and control circuits.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in plastics manufacturing or plastics extrusion environments.
Background in welding and general electrical maintenance tasks.
Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for recording work hours and managing inventory tied to work orders.
Ability to clearly explain troubleshooting steps and reasoning during practical tests and on-the-job problem solving.
Preparedness to answer technical questions related to VFD troubleshooting, expected voltages in 480V and 208V three-phase systems, encoder types, and DC contact behavior as part of the hiring process.
