Firefighter/Paramedic

This is an internal posting for current Firefighter/Paramedics with the Westerville Division of Fire. External applicants will not be considered. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of June 1st.

Supervision

Work is performed under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Chief. Standards and procedures are defined by a variety of state and national guidelines such as BOCA, OSHA, and the National Fire Protection Association. Work is reviewed through regular meetings and performance reviewed completed by the Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Chief.

Essential Functions of Work

Inspects schools, hospitals, nursing homes, industries, etc., to insure compliance with City and State fire safety codes. Reviews building plans and buildings under construction to ensure compliance with fire safety codes. Inspects businesses, schools, industries, etc., to preplan fire fighting strategies. Conducts investigations of fires and fire scene to determine cause and origin of fires. Conducts in-service fire safety training for hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, industries, and schools. Completes inspection reports. Drives City vehicle to complete job duties. Notifies supervisor about inspection problems. Maneuvers around obstacles and performs some inspections in confined areas.

Minimum Requirements of Work

High school diploma or G.E.D. Two (2) years of experience as a full-time Fire Fighter. Must be certified by the State of Ohio as a Fire Safety Inspector, Firefighter II, and Paramedic*. *May reduce level of certification to EMT if approved by the Fire Chief. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License free from excessive violations. Knowledge of City and State fire safety codes (BOCA Codes). Knowledge of geographical layout of fire district. Knowledge of fire fighting principles, practices, and safety. Knowledge of fire investigation techniques. Ability to identify existing or potential problem areas and initiate corrective measures. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to read and recognize hazardous warning labels. Ability to read building plans.
