Field Service Engineer

As a Field Service Engineer at Barry-Wehmiller, you will play a vital role in the installation, servicing, PLC programming/troubleshooting, and support of capital equipment within the paper, packaging, converting, or precast concrete industries.

Key Responsibilities/Complexities

PLC Programming and Troubleshooting: Program, debug, and troubleshoot PLC systems and other automation controls to optimize machine performance.

Customer Support: Troubleshoot customer equipment issues on-site, providing timely and effective solutions.

Installations and Upgrades: Assist with on-site installations, commissioning, and upgrades of new and existing machinery.

Diagnostics and Servicing: Conduct routine and emergency servicing, diagnosing electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical issues.

Training: Train customer operation and maintenance personnel with an emphasis on safety, PLC systems, and best practices.

Documentation: Maintain detailed records, including installation reports, programming changes, and service documentation.

Technical Guidance: Utilize assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, PLC ladder logic, machine manuals, and technical procedures for installations and adjustments.

Quality Assurance: Detect and report defective or faulty materials and equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Competencies

PLC Expertise: Hands-on experience in PLC programming, debugging, and troubleshooting.

Knowledge of manufacturing methods, automation controls, and electrical/pneumatic systems.

Ability to read and interpret schematics, prints, assembly layouts, and ladder logic.

Strong customer service skills with the ability to positively influence relationships.

Excellent problem-solving skills in situations with limited standardization.

Proficiency in MS Office; experience with CAD systems or SolidWorks is beneficial.

Strong written and verbal communication skills; multilingual proficiency is a plus.

Exceptional multitasking abilities, adaptability, and a positive attitude.

Supervisory/Responsibility

Work independently with general direction, adhering to policies and objectives.

Provide technical guidance for installations and PLC programming to team members as needed.

Work Environment

Field Service Engineers primarily work in customer facilities, often exposed to elements like dirt, oil, and grease.

Extensive travel is required, with overnight stays and extended periods away from home.

Physical Demands

Standing, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling may be required.

Lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted; greater than 50 pounds with assistance.

Normal mental and visual attention is required to perform various duties.

Position Type

This is a full-time, regular position. Extended days and hours may be required to meet business needs. Field time is anticipated to be approximately 75-80% annually, with holiday and weekend work routine for this role.

Travel

Extensive travel within North America (USA, Canada, Mexico) is expected, with opportunities for international travel based on interest.

Required Education and Experience

Field Service Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Controls from an accredited institution.

Field Service Technician: A two-year post-high school diploma/certificate in electro-mechanical technology or a similar associate/technical degree OR a high school diploma with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.

PLC Programming: Hands-on experience in programming, debugging, and troubleshooting PLCs is required.

Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and control systems is required.

Good mechanical aptitude and customer relations skills are essential.

Compensation

The approximate pay range for this position is $80,000–$110,000 annually. Please note that the pay range is a good faith estimate at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as experience, skills, and geographic location.
