Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, the Manager, Lending & Access leads the management and development of the Humanities & Social Sciences Library’s access services to ensure the delivery of user-focused library services to support teaching, learning and research activities at McGill University. The Manager, Lending & Access Services is responsible for setting goals and establishing priorities and procedures for various areas within the department, including Circulation, Reserves, Document Delivery and Network Loan.
The position is responsible for directly managing all operations and staff of Lending & Access Services at the Humanities & Social Sciences Library, the Birks Reading Room, and the Education Curriculum Resources Centre. The team is made up of Library Supervisors and Senior Library Clerks.
Main responsibilities and duties :
Manage the operations of Lending and Access Services at the Humanities & Social Sciences Library, the Birks Reading Room and the Education Curriculum Resources Centre, including loans, returns, reserves, audiovisual materials, and holds.
Supervise and manage Lending and Access Services staff at the Humanities & Social Sciences Library, Birks Reading Room and the Education Curriculum Resources Centre.
Oversee the recruitment, selection, deployment, development and performance management of staff.
Direct and manage the implementation of workflows and procedures related to lending materials from the McGill University Collections Centre (MUCC) and their distribution to McGill Library branches and the PBUQ consortium institutions.
Oversee the management of the physical collections in the Birks Reading Room and the Education Curriculum Resources Centre. This will involve the oversight of shelving and collection maintenance.
Chair the Lending & Access Services Committee, with the mandate of monitoring the effectiveness of library policies and services in meeting the needs of the McGill University Community.
Guide staff in focusing on client issues and in the continuous improvement of library services.
Redesign and re-evaluate workflows to meet the changing needs of clients, and to adapt to changes in library spaces.
Develop and maintain effective strategies for client-focused customer service.
Oversee the development of the collection, including the reserve materials and items in high demand.
Collaborate with Liaison Librarians for collections issues, client issues, and faculty liaison issues.
Assist with complex inquiries and troubleshoot technological issues related to PBUQ Network Loan and the Article/Chapter Scan service.
Plan and maintain communication links and liaison with designated academic departments/university units to ensure lending and access needs are understood and met.
Implement policies and procedures and oversee maintenance of manuals and documentation to ensure accuracy on the library web pages (the borrowing services section, the auto-loan help pages, etc.) and in documentation for library users (due-date slips, email notifications, etc.).
Attend various Library, faculty and university-wide committees and external committees representing the Library as required, including on Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec GTAD-Circ Comité and GTAD-Circ Communauté de Pratique.
Promote and market the Library’s products and services and assist in fundraising activities as appropriate.
Ensure compliance staff conduct and occupational health and safety requirements.
Collaborate with other libraries and University staff and sections, as well as external groups on specific projects.

Strong analytical skills and the ability to navigate complex situations and exercise sound judgement. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team. Sound Computer experience (OCLC WMS, OCLC article exchange, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat).Related library experience with increased management and supervisory responsibilities. Experience with circulation, library routines, space planning and management, and health & safety regulations. Knowledge of the procedures, workflows, and software required for consortial lending.
