General Description of Position

Veterinary technician plays an integral role in the care of the patients, clients, and veterinarians. The technician works directly with the veterinarian to provide medical support and help the doctor achieve greater efficiency by relieving technical work, record keeping and communication tasks. They have a very significant role in taking care of the everyday needs of the pets in the hospital ward and help maintain the hospital facility.

Job Requirements/ Skills/ Physical Demands

An employee in this position must have a sense of caring for animals, be able to lift approximately 50 pounds and work on feet all day. Must effectively be able to read, speak and write in English. Must have basic computer literacy skills and be able to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment. Professional appearance required, scrubs are to be worn at all times.

Reports to: Veterinary Technician Supervisor or Veterinarian and or Veterinary Medical Director on staff.

Essential Functions

•Provide compassionate care for pets

•Restrain pets for veterinarians and technicians

•Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, hospital services and other issues

•Obtain relevant information and history from clients and assist veterinarian with proper medical notes.

•Assist in the taking of x-rays

•Assist veterinarian with surgery

•Monitor and collect urine and fecal samples as needed

•Monitor, record, and report physical signs of hospitalized/boarded pets

•Clean hospital ward cages and runs including exam rooms, treatment room and isolation area,

•Maintain pharmacy and treatment area in a neat and sanitary condition

•Provide clean bedding, water and litter pans for hospital ward pets

•Feed hospitalized as needed

•Exercise hospitalized dogs as needed

•Take incoming pets to appropriate areas

•Prepare pets for dismissal

•Retrieve pets that are being discharged

•Complete ear cleanings and nail trims

•Prepare samples for outside laboratory analysis

•Maintain and use laboratory medical equipment

•Do hospitalized pet laundry

•Clean and sanitize surgical instruments

•Perform closing procedures

•Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

1. Looking for licensed veterinary technicians with at least 1 year of experience as a licensed vet tech.

2. Candidates should be local - within 20 miles

3. Able to lift approximately 50 pounds and work on feet all day.

The primary purpose and function of the associate veterinarian is to provide the highest quality of pet medical care with outstanding client experience. The Associate veterinarian is to maintain animal health by diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries. The Associate Veterinarian works under the direct guidance and supervision of the management team and medical director. The Associate Veterinarian is expected to be an advocate of the human-pet bond, educate clients and hospital associates on pet health and contribute to the medical quality and business performance of the hospital.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITES

•Provide the highest quality of veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner

•Ensure that every client their pet receives an exceptional hospital experience

•Examine animals to detect and determine the nature of diseases or injuries.

•Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, dressing wounds, performing surgery, or other therapies.

•Inoculate animals against various diseases.

•Collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, or other body fluids for examination and analysis.

•Perform laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology and urinalysis.

•Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interpret the resulting images.

•Perform basic surgeries with appropriate anesthesia, monitoring, recovery and pain management with the assistance of the technical team

•Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post surgery patients and treatment plan guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment including client follow up post hospitalization.

•Answer client questions and provide education on various aspects of animal care and treatment. Advise animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, and general care necessary to promote health of their pets.

•Educate the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.

•Call back/follow-up with clients; recommend medical progress visits when appropriate.

•Humanely euthanize animals when it has been mutually agreed upon by the patient’s owner.

•Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and patient records.

•Train and supervise team members who handle and care for animals; as needed.

•Collaborate with clients and employees in a professional and ethical manner

•Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively influence the level of care and service provided to the clients and patients of Randall Road Animal Hospital.

•Participate in business development as instructed by management and/or ownership.

•Mentor veterinary student externs and students in summer jobs.

•Attend monthly team meetings and other pertinent in-hospital training.

•Perform other duties assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

•Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of veterinary medicine and science. Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.

•Ability to read and interpret documents, including federal and state regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and medical texts.

•Ability to write reports, correspondence and medical records that meet professional standards.

•Able to perform veterinary surgery in a safe, accurate and healthy manner.

•Medicine and Dentistry Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.

•Client and Personal Service Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client and personal services. This includes client needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of client satisfaction.

•Must have active listening, critical thinking, complex problem solving, time management, judgment and decision making skills.

ATTITUDE EXPECTATIONS

The associate veterinarian provides continuing or individual assignments to the healthcare team indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected in accordance with the hospital policies and procedures. The associate veterinarian uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the owner-doctor(s) or medical director for decision or help. Administrative supervision may be provided by the management team.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Follow federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OR TRAINING

1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.

2. Veterinary license in good standing within the state of Illinois

3. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily.

4. Qualifies to have a DEA license.

5. Veterinarian with 2 to 3 years of experience.

6. Must have desire to do surgery and work in a busy environment.
