Job Description
We are a small, agile, R&D-driven, and mission-oriented company—working at the interface of engineering, biology and micro/nano-systems. We design and build real-world electromechanical systems where mechanical design, custom electronics, and embedded firmware are tightly integrated. If you thrive in a hands-on environment where you move quickly from concept to prototype to system, you will feel at home here.
As a R&D Electromechanical Engineer, you’ll work end-to-end—from CAD and mechanism design to hardware bring-up and firmware integration. This role is ideal for engineers who identify primarily as mechanical engineers but are confident in designing electronics and writing firmware to make hardware move. You will be expected to execute independently and contribute to the progression of technologies toward commercialization.
Key Responsibilities (What You’ll Do)
Lead the design of electromechanical systems, subsystems and assemblies for smart automated platforms
Create detailed CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools
Design structures, mechanisms, enclosures, mounts, and drivetrain components
Perform mechanical analysis (loads, tolerances, materials, thermal considerations)
Select motors, gearboxes, bearings, fasteners, and structural materials
Ensure robust mechanical–electrical integration (mounting, cable routing, thermal paths)
Design PCB schematics and layouts for motor control, sensing, actuation, and power electronics
Select electronic and mechanical components and manage BOMs
Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation
Develop and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based systems
Implement and debug firmware drivers (GPIO, ADC, PWM, SPI, I C, UART, CAN)
Support sensor integration, motor control interfaces, and safety features
Rapidly prototype using 3D printing, machining, soldering, and lab testing
Support design for manufacturing, assembly, and scaling (DFM/DFA)
Contribute to system-level testing, validation, and iteration
Troubleshoot prototypes, perform testing, analyze results, document findings, revise designs and scale toward manufacture.
Develop and manage fast-paced project timelines while proactively identifying and mitigating risks, and Work closely with cross-functional teams
Maintain strong documentation of process flows, design history files, risk assessments, prototypes, and results—supporting potential regulatory or commercialization pathways.
Effectively communicate results and technical insights to clients and stakeholders through both written reports and oral presentations.
Contribute to IP generation, technical reports, grant proposals and internal project milestones.
Stay current on scientific literature, and emerging technologies and incorporate them as needed.
Qualifications (What We’re Looking For)
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related field
3–6 years of experience in complex electromechanical products
Strong mechanical design experience using SolidWorks or similar CAD software
Demonstrated hands-on PCB design experience (schematic capture and layout (Altium, KiCad))
Practical embedded firmware experience
Solid understanding of motors, sensors, and electromechanical system integration
Deep hands-on skills in:
Electromechnical system integration
Embedded systems (microcontrollers, real-time programming, hardware/software co-design)
Circuit design (analog/digital), motor control, power electronics
Simulation (MATLAB/Simulink)
Programming (Python, C/C++, ROS)
Lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.)
· Detail-oriented, systems-focused, and passionate about delivering high impact through innovation
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and documentation skills; able to communicate clearly in written and oral form.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, resource-constrained R&D environment, collaborating across disciplines, and handling ambiguity.
A track-record of driving R&D projects to prototype stage and beyond, with attention to manufacturability and transferability.
Bonus Skills:
· Experience with motor drivers, motion control, or PID tuning
· Familiarity with RTOS environments (e.g., FreeRTOS)
· Knowledge of EMI/EMC and grounding strategies
· Experience working with manufacturers and contract assemblers
· Exposure to ROS/ROS2 or robotic software stacks
· Wireless protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa)
· Familiarity with medical device regulations (ISO 13485, FDA standards)
· Understanding of regulatory, quality, and safety standards applicable to laboratory and analytical instrumentation.
· Demonstrated commercial product development experience, including design-for-manufacturing (DFM), machine design, and automation engineering.
Why You will Join Us
You will work on impactful, high-visibility technologies—not just incremental features.
You will be part of a small, cross-disciplinary team where your expertise is pivotal and visible.
You will have autonomy, ownership and the opportunity to shape new device platforms and technologies.
You will gain exposure to both early-stage R&D and downstream commercialization pathways.
We offer competitive compensation, and benefits appropriate for a high-impact R&D role.
