Intellectual Property Portfolio Manager

The Intellectual Property Portfolio Manager, a key member of the Global Intellectual Property department, will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration between the legal and engineering teams to safeguard Vertiv's intellectual property. The primary focus of this role is managing an international patent portfolio, including processing invention disclosures, drafting patent applications, and overseeing outside counsel. Additionally, responsibilities encompass the development, implementation, and supervision of patent policies, procedures, and processes company-wide, as well as handling patent-related matters for designated Product Lines.

Primary Responsibilities

Serve as the primary intellectual property lead for assigned product line(s), aligning patent strategy with product development and business goals.

Work closely with engineers and product teams to identify patentable innovations and guide inventors through the invention disclosure process.

Lead product line patent committee discussions and make recommendations on patent filings, scope, and jurisdictions.

Manage outside patent counsel and oversee patent drafting and prosecution to ensure quality, consistency, and cost control.

Maintain and evaluate the patent portfolio for the product line, identifying gaps and opportunities to strengthen coverage.

Act as a liaison between technical teams, legal leadership, and business stakeholders to translate technical innovation into effective IP protection.

Track and report key IP metrics and communicate portfolio status, trends, and risks to management.

Promote an innovation focused culture and ensure all activities comply with corporate IP policies and legal requirements.

Requirements

Preferred candidate will have at least 3 years of patent prosecution experience with a reputable law firm or company.

Prior corporate Intellectual Property management experience is a plus.

Minimum BS in Engineering or Physics; an MS or Ph.D. would certainly be valued (other engineering disciplines will be considered as well).

Must possess excellent interpersonal skills suitable engineering as well as executive management interaction.

Licensed to practice in front of the USPTO is desired.
