Position Details:

Ophthalmic Technician / Ophthalmology Assistant

Our Mercy Specialty Clinic is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our eye care team. This role plays a vital part in delivering high-quality care by supporting physicians, assisting patients throughout their visit, and ensuring efficient clinic operations.

Due to the specialty of the clinic, we are seeking one who has previous experience is ophthamtry!

Position Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician greets patients, escorts them through the clinic, obtains medical histories, assists providers during examinations and minor procedures, and performs a variety of diagnostic tests. This position works closely with physicians, optometrists, and clinic staff to provide exceptional patient care while maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Support

Greet patients and escort them to and from examination rooms

Obtain ocular, medical, and family history

Assist physicians during exams, minor surgeries, and in-office procedures

Instruct patients on medications, testing, and surgical procedures

Perform or assist with ordered diagnostic testing

Perform pre-operative procedures including A-Scans, pulse, and blood pressure

Administer and assist with eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions (preferred)

Diagnostic Testing

Perform handheld tonometry

Conduct visual field testing, PAM, BAT, color vision testing, and Amsler grid

Perform pupil evaluations, confrontation fields, extraocular motility testing

Operate equipment including automated keratometry and corneal topography

Clinic & Equipment Support

Set up, prepare for, and assist with surgical procedures performed in-office

Clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments

Maintain accurate records and take dictation

Stock supplies on a weekly basis

Communication & Administrative Support

Answer and screen telephone calls

Triage emergency calls and return patient messages

Assist with surgery scheduling and screening as needed

Provide front desk coverage when necessary

Assist optometrists with contact lens insertion, removal, cleaning, ordering, and returns

General Duties

Perform additional duties as assigned

Follow universal precautions at all times

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment

Adhere to dress code and maintain a professional, well-groomed appearance

Meet Health System attendance standards

Qualifications

Required

High School Diploma or GED

Strong telephone and communication skills

Ability to work effectively with patients, staff, and the public

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines

Preferred

Knowledge of ophthalmology and optometry office procedures

General medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and ocular/systemic diseases

Experience with pharmacology related to eye care

Minimum of one year of prior related work experience
