Job Title: Fleet Diesel Mechanic
Job Description
This role focuses on maintaining and repairing a fleet of diesel vehicles and heavy equipment, ensuring they operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current standards. The position is based in Hallettsville, TX, with regular work also performed in Victoria, TX, and involves hands-on diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and complex mechanical and electrical repairs on a variety of fleet and material-handling equipment.
Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive fleet maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment, including class 6–8 trucks and related machinery.
Conduct diagnostics on engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and emissions systems using advanced diagnostic platforms and tools.
Carry out after-treatment and emissions repairs on diesel vehicles, ensuring systems meet performance and regulatory standards.
Inspect, service, and repair hydraulic and air brake systems to maintain safe and reliable braking performance.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and system inspections according to established maintenance schedules.
Document all maintenance and repair work completed, including parts used, mileage, usage hours, and identified issues, using computer-based systems and applications.
Use diagnostic troubleshooting codes and OEM support tools to identify root causes of mechanical and electrical issues and implement effective repair solutions.
Remove, replace, and reinstall mounted wheels and tires, ensuring all fasteners are torqued to proper specifications.
Manage and track parts usage and inventory, supporting efficient parts management and inventory control processes.
Operate and maintain shop tools and equipment such as engine hoists, welding equipment, tire-changing tools, and small hand and power tools.
Diagnose and repair forklifts and material handling equipment, including propane, electric, and battery systems, hydraulic systems, and pallet jacks.
Work with manufacturing standard manuals and electronic modules, staying current with the latest technology, standards, and repair procedures.
Work independently under limited supervision, including performing tasks remotely from direct supervision while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
Safely perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, reaching, climbing, pinching, and handling tools and parts as required to complete repairs.
Use computers and handheld devices (such as tablets, laptops, and diagnostic interfaces) to perform diagnostics, access technical information, and update maintenance records.
Support a safe, clean, and organized shop environment by following all safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.
Essential Skills
Hands-on experience as a diesel or fleet mechanic working with class 6–8 diesel vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, including after-treatment and emissions systems.
Strong knowledge of hydraulic and air brake systems, including inspection, troubleshooting, and repair.
Ability to use diagnostic platforms such as Noregon, Snap-on, Nexiq, Altel, or similar systems.
Experience utilizing diagnostic troubleshooting codes to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues.
Proficiency with mechanical systems, including engines, electrical components, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
Experience using shop tools such as engine hoists, welding equipment, tire-changing equipment, and standard small tools.
Experience with preventive maintenance programs, including following maintenance schedules, documenting work, and tracking mileage and usage hours.
Experience with parts management and inventory control processes.
Ability to work independently under limited supervision while maintaining quality and safety.
Comfort working with computers and digital tools, including tablets, desktop and laptop computers, and handheld devices for diagnostics and documentation.
Experience repairing forklifts and material-handling equipment, including propane, electric, battery, and hydraulic systems, as well as pallet jacks.
Familiarity with manufacturing standard manuals and OEM support tools, including working with electronic modules and staying current with technology and standards.
Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds with or without an accommodation.
Ability to perform physical movements such as lifting, pinching, bending, reaching, climbing, and manipulating and handling objects with or without an accommodation.
Ability to pass a forklift driving skills test, if applicable.
Ownership of basic hand tools required to perform daily maintenance and repair tasks.
Minimum age of 18 years.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Training or experience specifically involving hydraulic and air brake systems.
Experience repairing heavy-duty equipment, including class 6, 7, and 8 vehicles and machinery.
Experience performing emissions and after-treatment repairs on class 6–8 diesel vehicles.
Experience using a variety of diagnostic platforms and remaining adaptable to new diagnostic technologies.
in working with preventive maintenance programs within a fleet environment.
Experience working with OEM support tools and manufacturer service information to perform accurate repairs.
Demonstrated ability to stay up-to-date with the latest technology, standards, and repair methods in fleet maintenance.
Comfort working in multiple locations and adjusting to different shop setups and workflows.
Welding experience for repair and maintenance of fleet and shop equipment.

Work Environment
The position is based primarily in Hallettsville, TX, with the work week split between the Hallettsville facility and a location in Victoria, TX. You will work in a shop environment equipped with diagnostic, ergonomic, and high-tech tools and equipment provided by the employer, including engine hoists, welding equipment, tire-changing tools, and computerized diagnostic platforms. The role involves regular use of computers, tablets, and other electronic devices for diagnostics and documentation. Work is hands-on and physically active, requiring lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, climbing, and handling tools and parts, with accommodations available where needed. The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $37.00/hr.
