Job Summary
NiSource - Columbia Gas & Nipsco - is hiring a Mailing Equipment (Inserter) Operator / Tech to support our high-volume Printing & Mail Operations team. This role is an excellent opportunity for an equipment-minded individual with mechanical aptitude who wants to build a long-term career in a stable, essential industry with growth opportunities.
In this position, you will learn to operate, monitor, and troubleshoot high-speed Kern inserting equipment used to produce customer bills, regulatory notices, letters, and safety communications for six NiSource operating companies. Prior mailing or inserter experience is not required - NiSource provides structured, hands-on training and ongoing mentoring to help you succeed.
Success in this role means working collaboratively as part of a production team to meet same-day mailing service level agreements for 100,000+ mail pieces per day, while maintaining high standards for accuracy, quality, and safety.
Essential Functions
Learn to set up, operate, and monitor high-speed mailing equipment through on-the-job training
Perform routine equipment inspections and basic operational checks to keep machines running efficiently
Learn to clear jams, make minor adjustments, and troubleshoot under guidance
Perform daily and weekly basic cleaning and upkeep tasks
Follow Lean 5S practices to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
Support production schedules and quality checks to meet same-day mailing deadlines
Accurately complete basic production and quality documentation
Collaborate with team members to identify issues and suggest process improvements
*Escalate equipment or quality concerns as needed to support overall production goals
Advanced equipment adjustments, optimization activities, and mentoring responsibilities are developed over time as skills increase.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Mechanical aptitude or strong interest in working with equipment, machinery, or technical systems
Willingness to learn new equipment and processes through hands-on training
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-production environment
Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive motion throughout the shift
Basic math skills and strong attention to detail
Dependability, accountability, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
Experience operating industrial, manufacturing, or production equipment
Previous exposure to mechanical, maintenance, technical, or manufacturing environments
Knowledge of mailing operations or USPS regulations (can be trained)
Basic computer or machine interface experience
Training & Development

Salary Range*: $40,800.00 - $57,100.00
*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
