Custodial Associate Part Time (Evenings & Weekends)

MISSION: Massachusetts Horticultural Society helps people to change their lives and communities for the better through growing plants together. Much of our work takes place through the public Garden at Elm Bank.

Overview: The part-time, non-exempt, non-supervisory Janitor is an evening and weekend role focused on event turnaround at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. This position exists to support the Garden at Elm Bank's busy calendar of public festivals, weddings, and special events and is not a standard MondayFriday schedule. The majority of shifts fall on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays, often during and immediately after events. Candidates must be fully available for approximately 3 weekend nights per week. They work under the Director of Garden and Programs (DOGP).

Job Responsibilities:

Set up and clean up before, during, and after events and weddings on evenings and weekends. This includes:

Setting up and taking down tables, dance floors, and equipment.

Cleaning up during and after events and removing trash.

Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms and making sure they are stocked throughout events.

Sweeping, mopping, and handling spills in real time during events.

Keeping outdoor areas and gardens free of litter during and after events.

Being present and available for the duration of event hours as needed.

Perform post-event cleaning of all buildings and public areas. This includes:

Vacuuming, dusting, deep cleaning, and sanitizing public areas after events.

Cleaning and maintaining all facilities and equipment.

Taking out trash and recycling.

Follow the work schedule and procedures for each event.

Notice and take care of cleaning or maintenance needs as they come up.

Safely use and clean all equipment.

Follow all safety and health rules.

Keep track of supplies and request replacements when needed.

Qualifications:

Must be available to work approximately 3 weekend nights per week (primarily Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays) this is a firm requirement of the role.

Experience in cleaning, building maintenance, or event setup preferred.

Good attention to detail and strong communication skills.

Good time management and organization skills.

Ability to use heavy cleaning equipment and follow safety rules.

Able to work independently and with a team.

Must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license and car insurance.

Reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to walk around the garden in all weather.

Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 70 lbs for long periods.

Must be able to bend, climb stairs, stand for long periods, reach, and do other physical tasks.

REPORTS TO: Director of Garden and Programs

Hours: Up to 20 hours/week

Schedule: Primarily Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays; dependent on the MHS calendar of events. This is not a weekday or daytime role.

Season: Year-round, with peak hours during event season

Pay: The salary range for this position is $20 to $25/hour. In modeling MHS's commitment to openness and transparency, starting salaries aren't typically at/near the top of this range. This is to create opportunities for team members to earn performance-based raises throughout their tenure in the role.

Status: Part-time, hourly
