Job Description
Big South Fork Medical Center, a 25-bed critical access hospital, located in Oneida, TN is recruiting for a full-time Plant Manager.
The Plant Manager is a working leadership position responsible for the oversight, maintenance, and operational efficiency of the hospital’s physical plant and Environmental Services (EVS), ensuring a safe, compliant, and well-maintained environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Plant Operations Responsibilities
• Oversee daily operations of the facility’s physical plant, ensuring systems are safe, functional, and compliant with applicable regulations.
• Manage and perform repairs (mechanical and non-mechanical) involving machinery, equipment, plumbing, heating systems, masonry, sheet metal work, water treatment, and related infrastructure.
• Supervise maintenance staff and ensure timely completion of preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.
• Assist the hospital CEO and Operations COO in planning, directing, and implementing in-house construction and maintenance projects; assign tasks and perform quality checks.
• Recommend and implement improvements to plant operations, infrastructure, and equipment reliability.
• Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and order materials as needed.
• Monitor alarm systems and escalate issues as appropriate.
• Ensure proper monitoring and maintenance of medical gases, fuel systems, and critical utilities.
Environmental Services (EVS) Responsibilities
• Oversee daily housekeeping operations to ensure a clean, sanitary, and safe environment throughout the facility.
• Ensure compliance with all infection control standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., CMS, OSHA).
• Develop and maintain cleaning schedules for patient rooms, procedural areas, common spaces, and high-touch surfaces.
• Conduct routine inspections and audits of cleanliness; address deficiencies and implement corrective actions.
• Partner with Infection Prevention to support cleaning protocols, isolation procedures, and outbreak response efforts.
• Train, supervise, and evaluate EVS staff on proper cleaning techniques, safety procedures, and service expectations.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals and equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
• Oversee waste management processes, including biohazard, sharps, and general waste disposal, ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Monitor linen services, including inventory control, distribution, and quality assurance.
• Support efficient room turnover processes to facilitate patient flow and operational needs.
• Address and resolve cleanliness-related concerns from patients, staff, and visitors in a timely manner.
• Track and report EVS performance metrics, including quality audits, turnaround times, and patient satisfaction.
• Identify and implement opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies within EVS.
• Coordinate deep cleaning, terminal cleaning, and emergency response cleaning activities.
• Ensure EVS equipment is properly maintained and replaced as needed.
Management Responsibilities
• Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
• Conduct employee performance evaluations; train and onboard staff; ensure adherence to safety standards and hospital policies
• Collect and analyze operational data to reduce inefficiencies and improve system performance.
• Prepare reports for leadership regarding plant operations, compliance, and improvement initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Certification
• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) – preferred
• Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) – preferred
• Hazardous Materials / Waste Handling Certification (e.g., HAZWOPER awareness level) – preferred
• HVAC Certification highly desirable
Experience
• Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in plant operations, preferably in a healthcare setting.
• At least two (2) years of supervisory or management experience required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
• Working knowledge of hospital facility systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas systems, and life safety systems
• Knowledge of environmental services standards, including cleaning, sanitation, and waste management best practices
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and regulatory guidelines
• Strong team management skills with the ability to coach, develop, and hold staff accountable
• Effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills, particularly in high-pressure or emergency situations
• Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
• Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, leadership, vendors, and regulatory agencies
• Proficiency in basic computer systems (e.g., work order systems, Microsoft Office, email platforms)
