Juvenile Detention Shift Supervisor Starting Salary Range: $28.9663 - $31.8813 per hour Full Time Location: Normal, IL Job Summary The Juvenile Detention Supervisor works with court involved youth in a secure twenty-four-hour detention setting.
Duties include communicating effectively with staff to attain all necessary tasks for each shift; reporting directly to administration all pertinent information; and direct care during court runs, transports, vacancies, illness, life emergencies, training, or as directed by administration.
This position requires dealing with all youth in a fair, firm, compassionate and consistent manner while reinforcing positive behavior expectations.
This position serves as a leader and supervisor for Juvenile Detention Officers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Ensures adequate staff coverage for shifts, schedules, and assignments; monitors staff performance and evaluates duties and activities.
* Develops and maintains effective supervisory relationships; conducts periodic performance reviews of staff; assists administrators with the development of policies and procedures; maintains shift and other records.
* Assists in the hiring process, orientation, and training of personnel; identifies and assesses staff training needs and develops training; assesses and communicates needs of staff and makes recommendations to administrators.
* Performs intake investigations to screen delinquent minors to determine necessity for secure detention.
* Completes all admission decisions; completes review of intake and release procedures.
* Makes decisions in the absence of Administration with regard to secure detention and facility needs.
* Plans or assists in the development and provision of programming for detainees; evaluates programming and makes recommendations for improvement.
* Performs security, safety, and custodial care duties; performs physical plant searches; performs head counts; transports detainees for court hearing and medical appointments.
* Perform safety and security checks for all approved personnel entering the facility.
* Provides guidance, care, and support to detainees and facilitates constructive relationships; responds to crisis situations in a safe, effective manner; observes and records behavior pattern changes in juveniles.
* Utilizes ATIMS and approves all necessary reports.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
* Review of all paperwork for accuracy * Provide guidance and support to staff, mentoring when needed * Ensure adequate staff coverage for shifts, schedules and assignments * Perform as designated health care coordinator in the absence of RN * Assist training officer with aspects of training of and for new detention officers * Develop and implement programs * Identify and assess staff training needs of officers * Observe, record, and report changes is resident behavior * Complete monthly facility inspections, fire drills, and staff evaluations * Adress and resolve resident grievance * Conduct interviews for potential detention officer or interns * Be available for rotational weekly on-call duty's * Prepare needed documentation and reports of facility audits and inspections * Perform other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Knowledge of juvenile behavior and effective communication techniques.
* Knowledge of criminal justice administration as it pertains to juveniles.
* Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the juvenile detention facility.
* Some knowledge of modern supervisory principles and practices.
* Knowledge of local government operations, Human Resource related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
* Skill in providing guidance, care, and support to detainees and to facilitate constructive relationships.
* Skill in dealing with juveniles in a fair, firm, compassionate, and consistent manner.
* Skill in treating juveniles with respect and dignity while reinforcing positive behaviors.
* Skill in obtaining compliance with detention facility rules and regulations.
* Ability to supervise the work of shift officers and exercise authority with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
* Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and physically restrain detainees, as needed.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other court services staff, juveniles and family members, and the general public.
* Ability to deal properly with confidential and sensitive matters.
Required Qualifications Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related social sciences field and one (1) to three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in juvenile detention/residential service work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Illinois Driver's License.
Physical Demands and Work Environment The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Requires the ability to balance, crouch, kneel, lift and push/pull various objects, stand, stoop, run, and walk.
Work is performed in a juvenile detention facility.
Work is also performed outside and may expose the employee to inclement weather conditions and a variety of traffic and road conditions.
May include exposure to body fluids and potentially angry and/or dangerous persons.
May require the use of latex gloves and aprons.
